County in Good Financial Shape

Barnes County Commissioners approved the county’s financial statement for the period ending in Dec., 2012 and moving $100,000 each from the general fund into the corrections and the homeland security funds, during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

The financial statement, presented by accountant Harold Rotunda, shows that the county’s general fund had an ending balance of $1,748,200.
“The county is in pretty good shape,” Rotunda told commissioners.

Cops Say Don’t Travel When Advised Not To

Local law enforcement officials encourage motorists to stay off roadways during no travel advisories and to travel safely during travel alerts. Law enforcement agencies responded to numerous accidents Monday during blizzard-like conditions.

Bryan Niewind, captain for the North Dakota Highway Patrol southeast region, said the NDHP and North Dakota Department of Transportation has a three-prong approach when it comes to notifying the public of dangerous conditions and they don’t take travel advisories lightly.

VC Man Hurt in Sunday Crash

A Valley City man and two Fargo residents were all treated for minor injuries at Essentia Hospital in Fargo after a Sunday collision on Interstate 29 between the car being driven by the Valley City man and a parked North Dakota State Patrol police interceptor.

According to Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind, the only person not injured in the 4:07 p.m. crash at exit 50 on Interstate 94 northbound was Trooper Joel Liebl.

Injured were Devon Scott Stephens, 19, of Valley City; Mark Cramton, 30, of Fargo; and Kimberly Cramton, 31, of Fargo.

ND Winter Show Rodeo Turns 50

During the early days of the North Dakota Winter Show, it wasn’t uncommon for a stray bull to run loose on Main Street in Valley City during the agriculture show. Jim Nelson, chairperson for the rodeo committee, said now that all the livestock for the rodeo are housed at the Winter Show main arena, that isn’t a problem anymore — but the event remains just as popular.

Local Grower Offers Garden-Fresh Produce

Community Supported Agriculture is an idea that has recently taken off in the Barnes County area, allowing consumers to buy local produce directly from the grower.

CSAs operate by selling shares of their products to the public. In the case of Llama Trax Gardens near Valley City, the product is vegetables, fruit, and herbs straight from the garden.

In other words, subscribers pay an up-fron fee to the Hansens, who in turn grow fresh produce which they divide up between subscribers and distribute several times during the growing season.

Parent/Teacher conferences rescheduled

February 18, 2013

Due to the Barnes County blizzard warning, travel alert, weather, and poor road conditions in the rural areas Parent/Teacher conferences will not be held this evening at Valley City Public Schools. "We will be rescheduling conferences for Monday, March 4 with the same times," the school said in an email.

After school school activities and athletics practices will conclude at 4:45p.m. and students must be out of the buildings and on the way home by 5 p.m.

No Travel Advisory issued in the Jamestown and Valley City area

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have issued a No Travel Advisory for the Jamestown, Valley City and surrounding areas due to blowing snow causing near zero visibility. Conditions are such that motorists should not travel due to hazardous conditions which may make it unsafe to travel.

The NDDOT and NDHP is also LIFTING the No Travel Advisory in Devils Lake and Rolla, but motorists should still use caution while traveling in this area.
