Special Olympic Winter Games Comes to VC

Rita Mae Grant is pretty excited about the upcoming 2013 Special Olympics Winter Games which will be held in Valley City on Friday and Saturday.

After all, she’s been competing for 41 years and even competed in the Special Olympic World Games in Nagano, Japan in 2001. She knows exactly what kind of excitement is coming for her and her snowshoeing teammates.

2012 Overall Conservation Award Winner

Wes andd Michele Elston are young, enthusiastic producers who have built their operation from the ground up.

They installed a manure management system in 2006, are planting cover crops, and continue to plant field, livestock and farmstead windbreaks throughout their 2,200 acre farm.

The Elstons have participated in EQUIP to enhance their grazing system and to improve soil health.

The couple has a three-year-old son, Ian, who loves riding in any tractor or farm implement when given the chance.

Conservation Fair to be Held in VC Jan. 16

The First Conservation Community Fair is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Valley City Eagles Club Riverside Room.

Representatives from the Barnes County Soil Conservation District; Barnes County 319 Watershed Project; NRCS (programs, soil health and range), FSA,North Dakota.

Study: DL Water Not Big Threat

Water from Devils Lake does not pose a big threat for catastrophic flooding in Valley City. The public learned this during a public forum Thursday sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul, Minn. District, and the City of Valley City, where they informed audience the results of the first phase of their feasibility study. The study also showed that some of the alternatives for flood risk management considered were not found to be cost effective and would not be justified for implementation as a federal project.

Valley City Students Let Out Early

Valley City School Superintendent Dean Koppelman announced Friday morning that all Valley City public schools would be dismissed 2 p.m. Friday and buses would leave at that time. At the same time, the district also announced all Friday and Saturday school activities were canceled.

Think. I do it often. I probably do it too much. It takes just one thought to turn into a whole universe of thoughts. I didn’t know myself well when I was two years old but I’m guessing I asked, “Why” a lot because I do now. I just can’t stop thinking once a subject is given to me. If you stop me on the street and tell me you’re planning on opening a new business I’m already thinking about who you need to call to make you the best sign in town. I’m already thinking of how to get you better wholesale pricing. I’m thinking of how the store should be set up for the perfect flow.

Developers Talking About Rental Housing

Nobody has yet applied for a permit to build rental housing in Valley City, despite a current shortage of rental properties resulting from flooding protection buyouts.

David Schelkoph, city administrator for Valley City said he has informally heard developers talking about ideas for new apartment buildings, but permits haven’t been applied for.

Schelkoph said Valley City “is close to 100 percent occupancy in town with rental properties.”

Flu Season Has Begun

Flu season in Barnes County, as well as the remainder of North Dakota has begun.

As of Jan. 10, 1,077 cases of influenza have been reported statewide, with four cases reported in Barnes County. And that doesn’t reflect those who may have the flu but haven’t seen doctors.

Lori Thompson, Registered Nurse, of City-County Health District in Valley City believes the number will increase significantly as the disease spreads. Thompson also noted that test results of patients that are already infected may not be in.

Travel Alert issued statewide in advance of winter storm

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has issued a statewide Travel Alert through Saturday morning in advance of the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasted winter storm to impact the state.
