Longtime Leevers Store Manager Retires

March 30, 2015

Leevers Foods longtime general manager Rick Idland retired Friday after serving the company for 42 years, 27-and-a-half in Valley City. A sendoff party, complete with a golf course-themed cake, was held Friday at the store.

Dan Bergan, former manager of County Market in Jamestown, now takes over as manager.

CSA Teaches Glass Fusing

Glass fusing instructor Shellee Sauer of Lisbon was thrilled with the turnout for Thursday's glass fusing class in McCarthy Hall at Valley City State University.

Hastings Sole Church to Close After 116 Years

Spring Creek Lutheran Church will close its doors in June after 116 years of serving the Hastings, N.D. community.

While the sole church there was once the center of the community, members say a declining congregation has forced it to close. The final worship service will take place Sunday, June 28, at 1 p.m.

VCPD Awards 2 Men for Heroism During Boating Accident

Two Valley City police officers and two civilian men were recognized recently for their heroism during a boating accident that claimed the life of a Valley City State University student last spring. On Wednesday, the Valley City Police Department held its annual awards ceremony where these and other officers were recognized for their accomplishments.

Drug Court Graduates First Participant

The Stutsman-Barnes Juvenile Drug Court recently held its first graduation.

On March 11, the graduate, a Stutsman County participant, was presented with a graduation certificate from Southeast Judicial District Judge Thomas Merrick along with a plaque for being the first graduate from the program.

Yellow Lab Been Helping Students Read for 8 Years

Junior is always looking for a hug, but he can also help students who need a little extra help reading.

Elementary School Title I teacher Alaine Toso and therapy dog Junior will retire at the end of this school year. Alaine's been with the district for 16 years, and together the duo has been helping students with reading for the past eight.

Is your furry (or feathery) friend the cutest in Barnes County? You can find out by entering the Times-Record's upcoming cutest pet contest.

The rules are pretty simple: email your cute pet photo to trnews1@times-online.com or drop it off at the office, 146 Third Street Northeast in Valley City. Remember to include the name your pet and the breed and age if known. If there are any people in the photo, include their names too.

Keith Baumgartner provided the Times-Record with this photograph of Del's Oriska Gamblers baseball team, champions of the Blue Ribbon League in 1972. On the team were Rod Oksendahl, Russ Larson, Keith Baumgartner, Mike Pfeifer, Rod Groth, Jolie Heinze, Keith Trader, Randy Mason, Dan Groth, John Weisenberger, Tom Olson, Joel Peterson, Tony Yanish, Kent Baumgartner and Manager/coach Bob Pfeifer.

The Hi-Liner girls lost to Bismarck Century, 1-4, but defeated Williston 3-2 at the state...
The VCHS Hi-Liners defeated the Fargo North Spartans 5-3 in the first round of the EDC softball...
