Library Room Named For Fischer

March 25, 2013

A plaque bearing the name Mary E. Fischer has been placed over the door of the multipurpose room in the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library.
In Fischer's 24 years as library director, she led the library to doubling the sized of the building, making it handicapped accessible, introduced computers to the library for book check-out (which meant bar-coding the entire collection) and acquired computers for patron use.

BC Offers Computerized Day Care Training

Training needed by both licensed and self-declared day care providers in Barnes County is either free of charge or low cost, said Dana Lindemann, Barnes County daycare licensor.
The annual training requirements for operating a center vary according to how many hours day care is provided per week.

Accident Causes Life-Threatening Injuries

March 22, 2013

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported a roll-over accident Wednesday on I-94 west of Valley City that resulted in life-threatening injuries for two individuals.

Foster Parents Needed for Service Dogs

March 22, 2013

Service Dogs of America needs volunteers to foster future service dogs, teach them basic manners, and help them become socialized before they are placed with disabled people.
The organization needs foster parents who can provide love and affection and help the puppies become comfortable in a variety of settings.
SDA provides service dogs that aid their partners in a variety of ways including with mobility and in medical emergencies.

BC Short of Day Care Providers

Barnes County is experiencing a shortage of licensed and self-declared daycare providers. Licensed and self-declared daycare providers play an important role in the community.
As the community continues to grow, so does the need for quality providers.

VC Fairly Safe From Flooding

The National Weather Service Grand Forks office Thursday issued an updated spring flooding prediction for the Sheyenne River at Valley City.
Chances are slight for spring flooding.
Predictions for flooding in Fargo are much different. Residents along the Red River in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., should prepare for one of the top five floods in their history.

After two recent years of record-breaking floods in the area, it may seem like the future of Valley City looks very wet, but according to two local women, a drought may be just as likely, although predictions can change rapidly.
World Water Day is observed March 22 as an effort to raise awareness on water issues. Jean Legge, former science teacher at Litchville Marion High School, and local water advocate Madeline Luke, both say that while the future of water in the area may be uncertain, the area should prepare for extreme weather events — whether it's a flood or drought.

$1 million lottery prize claimed by Wahpeton resident

The March 13 Match Five Powerball prize worth $1 million was claimed Wednesday at the Lottery office in Bismarck. The winning ticket was sold at the Cenex Convenience Store in Wahpeton.

The winner, a resident of Wahpeton who chose to remain anonymous, had to check the numbers several times to make sure it was the winning ticket.
The winner has no immediate plans for the prize winnings.

Sheriff's Department Could Have New Home

After a season of controversy between Barnes County officials and Valley City, county commissioners have elected to move forward with negotiations on a lease agreement for new offices for the Barnes County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's new home will likely be the old USDA building located off Winter Show Road. With an annual lease of $17,820 per-year and the costs for installing new technology for the building, the move will cost significantly more than staying in the Valley City Law Enforcement Center where the sheriff's department is currently located.

'Tabletop' on Medical Shelters April 16

March 20, 2013

A tabletop exercise on establishing a special medical shelter during future public emergencies will take place April 16 in Valley City.
“It will be a state-run exercise on how to set up and run a medical shelter if needed in our community – say if we had to evacuate for flooding,” said Theresa Will, director of the City-County Health District.
