Wednesday's Barnes County Tornado Drill Successful

May 3, 2013

Wednesday's Barnes County tornado siren drill was a success, except for one siren that failed to operate properly, said Kim Franklin, Barnes County emergency management director.
“I only had one complaint. All but one worked right – in Fingal,” Franklin said Thursday.

Vehicle Break-Ins Reported

Eight vehicle break-ins were reported to the Valley City Police Department on Tuesday and Wednesday. Police believe several more cases have gone unreported.
Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson said on Monday and Tuesday nights, someone opened unlocked car doors and stole items that were easily available.

Man OK After Ice Mishap

A Fargo man attempting to ice fish on Sanborn Lake 11:54 a.m. Tuesday fell through the ice into water up to his waist, and was so embarrassed he drove back home declining treatment, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath.
Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said Wednesday, “he went in the water up to his waist, got cold and declined treatment.”
McClaflin said he could not understand why anybody would try to ice fish on the last day of April. “I hope he won't repeat and it is a lesson learned.”

VCPS Makeup Plans

Valley City Public Schools superintendent Dean Koppelman announced in an email Tuesday the school district's plans if they have to make up a snow day.
The school board sent a request to the Department of Public Instruction and North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple's Office to waive having to makeup the missed day of school Monday, April 15. Koppelman said, "We may not have an answer to that request until the first part of next week."

Rain Predicted For Weekend

For Saturday during the day, the National Weather Service predicts a chance of rain, partly sunny, with a high near 51. On Saturday night, the forecast calls for a chance of rain and snow, mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.
On Sunday, Ewens said the forecast shows a chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. For Sunday night, the NWS predicts partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Farm Rescue Getting $200K from Foundation, Bank

Farm Rescue will receive two-year funding of $150,000 from the Otto Bremer Foundation and $50,000 from Bremer Bank.
The Jamestown-based group has helped Barnes County farmers with medical and health problems with their harvests, including Rick Diemert of Eckelson.

Stamp Out Hunger Set for May 11

On Saturday, May 11, Valley City residents can help fill the Barnes County Food Pantry with the 21st annual Stamp Out Hunger across America campaign.
The nationwide food drive is an effort by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service that provides assistance to the millions of Americans who are struggling to put food on the table everyday, according to a press release.
Pennie Reinke, USPS letter carrier who is heading the Valley City campaign, said, "All the proceeds we get go to the Barnes County Food Bank."

State's Attorney Likes New DUI Laws

Barnes County State's Attorney Lee Grossman said Monday he was pleased a new North Dakota law covering drunken driving includes tougher penalties for first offenses.
North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple signed legislation Monday aimed at strengthening penalties for drunken driving in North Dakota.

NDVMA Animal Hall of Fame Nominees Sought

North Dakota's Veterinary Medical Association is looking for nominees for its annual NDVMA Animal Hall of Fame Awards.
Nominees must reside in North Dakota and an official nomination form must be completed. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the NDVMA's website at www.ndvma.com or by contacting the NDVMA office at (701) 221-7740. A picture of the nominee, as well as a letter explaining why they should receive the award, must accompany the nomination form.

The Valley City Times-Record is officially an award-winning newspaper.
On Friday, the North Dakota Newspaper Association announced winners of the 2012 NDNA Better Newspaper Contest during its convention in Rapid City S.D. The T-R placed in a variety of areas including individual and staff awards in advertising, editorial and sports categories for daily newspapers with a circulation of less than 12,000. Newspapers in this circulation category also included the Jamestown Sun, the Dickinson Press, the Daily News in Wahpeton, the Devils Lake Journal and the Williston Herald.
