Alright gentlemen, Valentines Day is just around the corner. And I’m sure many of you have already got a gift for that special someone. But if you haven’t, an are planing on getting her something sweet. Instead of buying it why don’t you make some yourself? Now don’t start rolling your eyes and thinking that I must be nuts for even mentioning this. But there are some really easy recipes that anyone could whip up for their sweetheart. Besides, what girl wouldn’t love to get homemade sweets from her guy this Valentines Day?

Postal Service to Stop Saturday Delivery

The United States Postal Service announced Wednesday plans to transition to a new delivery schedule that will end regular mail delivery Saturdays on street and rural routes.

“Right now, the new change at this time is scheduled to start the week of Aug. 5,” Valley City Postmaster Sherry Johnson said, adding that the schedule is still tentative to change.

“That being said, mail will continue to be delivered to post office box customers just as is, so if you have a P.O. box, you won’t notice a change,” Johnson said.

Optometrist Going High Tech

Valley City’s Looysen I Care is going state of the art with new equipment for helping diagnose eye problems, said Dr. Steve Looysen, owner of the business on West Main Street.

“I have new technology that’s pretty exciting,” Looysen said Wednesday.
New technology that recently arrived at the operation include a tonometer, a digital camera for taking photographs of the rear of the eye, and a device called an OCT, or Optical Convergence Tomography.

Mercy Hospital Gaining, Losing Under ER Plan

Valley City’s Mercy Hospital is losing all its physicians assistants at the same time it has reached an arrangement so that a physician will be in the building at all times to ensure full care in the Emergency Room, said Keith Heuser, hospital administrator, Tuesday.

BC Commissioners’ Conduct Questioned

The Barnes County Commissioners discussed a complaint about a 9-1-1 call and its handling by some members of the commission during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

Commissioner Eldred Knutson received a copy of an e-mail complaint regarding a 9-1-1 dispatcher’s professionalism. According to Knutson, he heard a tape of the call and an internal investigation had already been done by Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson, who supervises the 9-1-1 dispatch center. Thompson handled the issue in-house according to Knutson.

Mother, Children Escape Serious Injury in Rollover on Interstate

A 22-year-old mother and her two children received minor injuries during a mid-morning rollover Tuesday on Interstate 94, Wes Maley, trooper with the North Dakota Highway Patrol, said.

Chelsey Dehne, 22, of Tower City, and her 9-month-old and 2-year-old children were transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for minor injuries after Dehne lost control of her 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer near milemarker 285, by Hobart Lake, on I94.

Rock-n-Roll At Jefferson Elementary

Rock-n-roll was the theme of the third-grade concert at Jefferson Elementary School on Monday. Students entertained a crowd with renditions of classic rock-n-roll music and even featured an appearance by “Elvis.”

Health Department Educates About Booster Seats

During Child Passenger Safety Month in February, North Dakota elementary school children and their parents will be receiving life-saving information about child passenger safety best practices through their local law enforcement and public health agencies. The students will also be receiving information about the “Ready? Safe? Go!” campaign. This campaign teaches children to ask themselves if they are traveling in the safest way possible – buckled up correctly in the back seat.

Elementary Schools Celebrate Kindness

Jefferson and Washington Elementary Schools will celebrate Kindness Week from Monday, Feb. 11 to Friday, Feb. 15.

Organized by elementary counselor Vanessa Kocka, Kindness Week is a way for kids to understand that “kindness is empathy, compassion and human connection; it’s a smile or a comforting word. The smallest gesture can brighten a dark day or ease a heavy burden,” according to the Valley City Public Schools newsletter.

BC Students Head to Spelling Bee

Barnes County students prepare for the annual Spelling Bee on Feb. 4 at Valley City State University.

The 35th Annual Barnes County Spelling Bee will be held on Feb 4th at Valley City State University’s Student Center.

Area schools will have a top speller competing in each of the two divisions: grades 5-6, Division II and grades 7-8, Division III.
Barnes County spellers will compete in a written and an oral section. The top two spellers overall will represent Barnes County on March 22nd at the ND State Spelling Bee in Bismarck.
