MOST RECENT: I-94 closed between Fargo and Jamestown; I-29 closed from Grand Forks to Watertown, S.D.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation along with the North Dakota Highway Patrol have closed Interstate 94 from Jamestown to Fargo, and Interstate 29 from Fargo to Grand Forks due to heavy snow, blowing snow and areas of near zero visibility creating hazardous driving conditions.

I-94 Closed Between Jamestown & Valley City
The NDDOT and NDHP have temporarily closed I-94 in Eastbound AND Westbound lanes between Jamestown and Valley City due to a traffic incident.

Reading Month at St. Kate’s

Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson reads to students at St. Catherine’s during Reading Month. Reading is always one of the most important subjects for the children as they begin to grow in their academics. February brought a number of readers into the classroom of first and second graders. St. Catherine’s is grateful to local leaders and family members who were willing to help show the children how important reading is.

Other readers included Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath, Grandma Cindy Zimmer, and Grandma Marlys Kunze.

Counselor Earns Award

Judi Hillier, guidance counselor at Jefferson Elementary School, was recently named North Dakota’s Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the North Dakota School Counselor Association.

Nominated by Jefferson Elementary School Principal, Troy Miller, Hillier was shocked when she heard she had won the award just a week before the NDSCA conference.

Counterfeit Bill Shows Up at Wells Fargo

February 18, 2013

An unspecified counterfeit bill showed up at Wells Fargo Bank in Valley City Monday. Lieutenant Mark McDonald with the Valley City Police Department said the bank received just one counterfeit bill, but he wasn’t sure of the amount. The VCPD forwarded the bill to the United States Secret Service for federal investigation.

McDonald said if someone does acquire a bill believed to be counterfeit, that person should turn it into a local law enforcement agency.

Faith Lutheran to Perform Lenten Drama

Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City invites the public to attend its Lenten drama series each Wednesday for the next five weeks.
Congregation members will perform a courtroom drama series called "The People vs. Jesus," each Wednesday night during Lent. The performance will begin right after a prayer and song at 6:30 p.m.

"The characters help us to better understand Jesus' life," Pastor Jolene Knudson-Hanse said. "Jesus is on trial, and so the jury is to say if he should be declared guilty or innocent."

Valley City Seeks Grants For Safe School Routes

Valley City is seeking about $230,000 in grants to improve safety for kids going to and from school.
Engineer Chad Petersen of Valley City Engineering Firm KLJ, said Thursday KLJ is working with the city, the Valley City School District and the Valley City Parks and Recreation District on getting funding from the Safe Routes to School and Transportation Alternatives Program.
Petersen said the safe routes program is abbreviated as SRTS and the other program is usually called TAP.

VC School Staff Win Awards

The Valley City Public School Board recognized two outstanding staff members for their recent achievements at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
Jefferson Elementary School counselor Judi Hillier earned the "North Dakota Elementary School Counselor of the Year Award", and Washington Elementary School principal Wayne Denault received the Region 6 "North Dakota Principal of the Year Award."
The board also accepted the retirement request of two employees and the resignation of another

For a young, newlywed couple, an exciting and often unknown future is in store. Newlyweds Tommy and Sasha Newman, Valley City, have already made memories as a married couple that will last them a lifetime.

With Valentine’s Day today, romance is in the air, but Sasha said Tommy was romantic from the start.

“He was really good for me; he would do anything for me,” she said.

Willard Boyer claims to know the secret to staying married for 62 years. “It’s easy,” he said. “Just do everything Ma says,”

Margaret Boyer was a bit less comic as she looked at her husband with a twinkle, “I just love being with him.”

Willard has been married to his sweetheart Margaret since soon after he returned from World War II where he was on a PT boat. Margaret had just finished nursing school and was working in Elgin, N.D., as a registered nurse.

For Vicky and Terry Jones the secret of staying together for 28 years and happily married for 22 years is being able to understand each other.
Said Terry, “To love and laugh. You’ve just got to work it out. Everything is not easy.”

Said Vicky, “I feel it (the marriage) gets better every year.”
Terry added, “It feels like you’re the right hand and the left hand. Each knows what the other is doing.”

The couple owns Vicky’s Viking Room, and Vicky is definitely the boss of the business.
