Buhr Refuses Recount

Sharon Buhr will not ask for a recount following her 50-vote loss for the District 24 Congressional seat.

In a recent statement Buhr said, “I would like to congratulate our newly re-elected District 24 state senator and two newly elected state representatives. There is much work to be done in our state so that all of our citizens have the opportunity to have a rich and full life.”

911 Switch Faces Possible Delay: Valley City Has Contract In Place Until July 2013

Barnes County Commissioners discussed postponing the proposed date for taking control of the 911 system from Jan. 1, 2013 to July 16, 2013 during their regular meeting on Tuesday.

It was brought to the county commissioners attention that the operating contract currently held by the city doesn’t expire until July 16, 2013. If the county voids the contract early, it may be open to legal action by the city for breech of contract.

Legacy Place Expanding, Gets New Administrator

The Legacy Place in Valley City opened with 25 residents in March 2009. Over three years later, it has nearly doubled in residents and tripled in services — and it’s still continuing to grow.

To accommodate for growth and better serve its residents, The Legacy Place, owned by Paul and Tanya Diegel, is reorganizing staff internally and seeking new staff.

Cami Hendrickson, who currently serves as the assisted living facility’s business office manager will take on duties as the interim administrator, a position currently held by Tamie Gerntholtz.

Shirley Focuses on ‘Transformation’ at State of VCSU

Valley City State University President Steven Shirley had little trouble acknowledging the school’s recent success Monday, when he addressed students, faculty and community members during his annual State of the University address at Vangstad Auditorium. But that didn’t keep him from looking to the near future.

“To use the term ‘crossroads’ too often becomes cliche,” he told the crowd. “However, I sincerely believe we are at a crossroads at Valley City State University, and with this crossroad, we have a unique opportunity to transform our educational offerings.”

VCSU Feeds Students for Holidays

College students don’t always have the opportunity to make it home for every holiday, so Valley City State University makes sure students who stay in town over the holidays are provided a nice meal.

VCSU is teaming up with Vicky’s Viking Room to offer a Thanksgiving meal to college students who aren’t able to make it home for the holiday weekend.

“I’ve always felt bad that I know there are students that can’t go home because it’s such a short holiday,” said Kari Stricklin, director of student activities at VCSU.

Students ‘Stuff the Truck’

Valley City Public School students stuffed a Coca-Cola truck with 109 tubs of food last Wednesday for the Barnes County Food Shelf during its annual “Stuff the Truck” food drive.

4 Charged in String of BC Burglaries

November 19, 2012

Official charges in connection with approximately 50 Barnes County burglaries have been filed against two Valley City residents and two Minnesota residents by the Barnes County Sheriffs Department, said Sheriff Randy McClaflin.

On Thursday District Court Judge Jay A. Schmitz ordered the arrest of Barnes County residents April Robyn Kapaun, 25, and Steven Lee Hovland, 38; and Minnesota residents Broc Allen Buytaert, 32; and Betsy Lee Runkle, 31.

Schmitz’s orders said there there was sufficient probable cause for the arrest of all four suspects.

Leevers stuff-a-truck is a community-wide effort to collect much needed non-perishable food items for the local food bank. Leevers is teaming up with local organizations to raise as much food as it can during this important time of the year. Drop off your donations before Nov. 25 to help restock the Barnes County Food Pantry.
