5 Vie for 2 County Commission Seats

Two newcomers will face incumbent Phil Leitner for Barnes County District 2 in Tuesday's primary election, while two others will compete for the Barnes County District 3 seat, which will be vacated when commissioner Eldred Knutson's term expires. Big Rift in a Small Town: Marion Divided

As elections for mayor and city commission approach, the city of Marion faces an issue that has segregated the community of about 133 residents – an issue that could easily flow over into Tuesday's elections. The issue: junk vehicles.

Marion resident and business man Larry Alber, owner of Larry's Auto Sales and Service, owns, by some estimates, hundreds of junk vehicles that are stored on lots throughout the city – some on property the city claims Alber doesn't own legally.

Former Football Pro to Speak at Literacy Program

June 5, 2014

The Valley City/Barnes County Public Library, in conjunction with the Valley City Public Schools, USA Football and the National Football League will host Pete Mitchell, former NCAA All-American tight end and an eight-year veteran of the NFL, for a children's literacy program with 40 area high school football players on June 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Jefferson Students Learn About Trees

Students at Jefferson Elementary School during the last week of school learned about not only the beauty, but all the wonderful benefits of trees.

Each class had the opportunity to observe the planting of a tree at their school.
The Valley City School District teamed up with the city’s Image and Beautification Committee to write a grant to plant 11 trees on the Jefferson School grounds.

Relay for Life Set for June 13

The community is invited to spend the evening outside, play games, eat food and rally against cancer at this year's Barnes County Relay for Life. A full day of activities are planned to kick off a Valley City weekend. In its 15th year, the Relay is teaming up with the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce's Rally in the Valley to offer plenty of activities to locals and visitors that weekend.

Grand Opening Planned for VC FCCU

June 4, 2014

A grand opening is planned for Valley City's new First Community Credit Union the week of June 23-27. The celebration will consist of loan and CD specials, door prizes, giveaways and refreshments all week. The Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting at the new facility at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25 with a free lunch to follow that is open to the community.

Driver Identified in Fatal Fingal Crash

June 3, 2014

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the name of the driver killed in a crash near Fingal early Monday morning is Timothy Stark of Wausau, Wisc.

The accident occurred on Highway 32, 10 miles south of I-94 near Fingal. Stark, 56, was northbound on Highway 32 and entered a curve. While negotiating the curve, the SUV crossed the southbound lane and partially drove off the west shoulder, according to Sergeant Tom Herzig of the North Dakota State Patrol.
