Throwback Thursday: Liberty Belles

The Valley City Times-Record plans to run a historical photograph each week on Thursdays submitted by our readers.

Marge Welken provided the Times-Record with this photograph of the Liberty Belles which appeared in the Valley City Times-Record on June 9, 1976.
Ladies from Barnes County Liberty Belles attended an appreciation luncheon wearing their bicentennial costumes in June, 1976. The Liberty Belles sponsored events in recognition of the nation's 200th birthday culminating in a bell-ringing at area churches for two minutes at 1 p.m., July 4, 1976.

VCSU Artist Exhibition Currently on Display

The McCarthy Gallery at Valley City State University announces its current senior exhibition “Kids From The Neighborhood” featuring the work of Hayden Swanson. The exhibition will be on display until April 26 in the McCarthy Gallery. An artist talk will be held at 12:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in McCarthy 257, with a reception for the artist at McCarthy Gallery from 6-8 p.m.

Snowy Owl Spotted Outside VC

Dick Monson found this snowy owl outside Valley City on April 6, much later than they are usually found in this area. The largest North American owl spends winters hunting in fields and summers in the far north hunting prey in 24-hour daylight.

Groundbreaking for New Hotel Held Tuesday

A groundbreaking for the new GrandStay Hotel and Suites in Valley City was held Tuesday morning.

Marie Casper of Discover Lodging Management, Inc., which will manage the hotel, said depending how things go, they're looking at a late summer or early fall opening.

Warrant Wednesday: Eronna Marie "Dutchess" Laroque

Each week, local law enforcement asks for help from the community in locating individuals who have warrants out for their arrest.

Eronna Marie "Dutchess" Laroque, 27, is wanted by the Barnes County Sheriff's Office on a bench warrant for failure to appear for an order to show cause hearing on original charges of driving while license privilege is suspended, a class-B misdemeanor and driving or operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor or drugs, a class-B misdemeanor.

Roxy's Frozen Yogurt Moves to Budget Burger

Roxy's Frozen Yogurt, a Valley City business that opened last summer, has moved into Budget Burger.

Max Drake opened Roxy's Frozen Yogurt in July last year in honor of his sister Roxanne Drake, who passed away suddenly in May 2013. Shortly after opening the store, Max passed away in his sleep on Aug. 4, 2014, said Tammy Drake, Max's mom who owns and operates Budget Burger with her family.

Truck, Ditch Burn on I-94

A truck caught fire on I-94 Friday destroying a cargo trailer and burning about an acre of ditch grass about 13 miles west of Valley City.

David Manwiller, 42, of Bismarck was driving a Peterbuilt semi-truck from Fargo to Bismarck pulling two enclosed trailers when he sensed the truck was not operating properly just before 5 a.m. Saturday, according to a media release from Sgt. Tom Herzig of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Two Arrested for Weekend Vehicle Break-ins

Two Valley City residents were arrested Saturday after a series of overnight vehicle break-ins. Chanda May Grant, 22, and Jesse Hildebrant, 20, each face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from several Friday night vehicle break-ins.

Members of the Faith Lutheran Church congregation Sang out, "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee," as they prepared to break ground for the new, modern structure that will become their new home on Sunday.

BC OKs 9-1-1 Recorder

April 13, 2015

Barnes County commissioners authorized Barnes County Emergency Management Director/9-1-1 Dispatch Coordinator Kimberly Franklin to purchase a logger/record system to record all radio and telephone calls that come to dispatch.
