One BC Truck Crash Victim Identified

August 19, 2013

The name of one of the drivers killed in a two-semi crash near Litchville last week has been released by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Allen Tofsrud, 46, of Leeds, N.D., died on the scene Wednesday after the crash that claimed the lives of both drivers.

Area Teen Involved in Deadly Crash

August 19, 2013

Two Litchville-Marion students, one from Litchville and one from Dickey, were passengers in a one-car crash that killed the driver, Micah Wagner, 18, of Fullerton.
Wagner, along with four passengers – Dylan Eull, 21, of Verona; Daniel Haugen, 18 of LaMoure; and two minors, ages 15 and 14 – were northbound on a gravel road about 2.5 miles south of LaMoure. Wagner lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the east ditch, went through a fence, into a pasture and overturned, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

UPDATE: Victims Identified in BC Crash

Two women were seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash Friday in Valley City.
Sandra Burchill, 69, and Geraldine Knutson, 65, both of Valley City, were reportedly seriously injured in the incident which took place on East Main Street and Second Avenue at about 5 p.m., according to Sgt. Troy Wolf of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Local Couple's Granddaughter Gets Nashville Record Deal

The granddaughter of local couple Lon and Sharon Sinness has been signed to a record label and will begin recording country music in Nashville later this month.
Caitlin Sinness, 11, known by her stage name Caitlin, is the daughter of Candy Sinness, who is the daughter of Lon and Sharon.
Lon was a crop duster for over 20 years in the Dazey area, and Candy attended school in North Central, now known as Barnes County North.

Corps Cutting Baldhill Dam flows For Inspection

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will complete a periodic inspection of Baldhill Dam, located northeast of Valley City, N.D., early next week.
“Every five years we do an intensive periodic inspection of the dam,” said Rich Schueneman, manager of the dam for the Corps.
Schueneman said three engineers including a geotechnical and mechanical engineer “will come on site and walk all over the structure to identify any changes or issues.”

Band Shell Group at $53K

As of Thursday, Friends of the City Park Band Shell had raised $53,900 in cash toward the estimated $150,000 cost of building a new foundation for the historic structure in City Park, said Becky Heise.
She estimated the total cost of the project will be about $150,000.
Along with the donations, Heise said the group has applied for $32,500 in grants. If all the grants are awarded, the group would be more than halfway to its goal at $86,400.

Man Suing VC for $25,000

Nathan Preston, who became embroiled with law enforcement on July 28 after he fired several shots at a pair of pit bull dogs with a .40 cal. handgun, has filed a $25,000 lawsuit in small claims court claiming false arrest and that city officials have violated his right to defend himself by confiscating two of his weapons including one he claims was not used in the shooting.

Rabies Cases Found In Southeastern North Dakota

August 15, 2013

Barnes County has been able to escape any reported positive cases of rabies so far in 2013, but five cases were diagnosed in the region, said Dr. Beth Carlson, deputy state veterinarian.
Tuesday Carlson said one case was confirmed in LaMoure County, two were confirmed in Ransom County, one in Richland County and one in Stutsman.

Straus Mall Public Opening Set

George Gaukler and his business partners in Valley City's Straus Mall are getting ready for a Sept. 1 public opening for the renovated downtown centerpiece.
Wednesday Gaukler said nearly all work on the structure was completed but the cleaning.
Gaukler is lead partner in Straus Mall Property LLC, the company owning the mall.
