Energy Beet Plot Tour in Litchville

Improved soil health, competitive yields during dry seasons and increased farm income are some of the benefits of energy beets that farmers will learn about during plot tours being held across North Dakota in August and September.
Energy beets are sugar beets bred for the biofuel market and for industrial purposes, used to create ethanol and high-value chemicals. Representatives from the energy beet project will discuss the project research so far, the positive impact to soil health, the crop’s tolerance to dry and saline soils, and the progress on commercializing this new industrial crop.

Blood Drive Set For Monday

Valley City is trying to get as many people as possible to donate blood for an Aug. 12 drive in the main room of the Valley City Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
The drive is set for 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The upcoming drive is being sponsored by the AmVet Ladies Auxiliary. People wanting to make an appointment should contact Rose at 845-1064.

VCSU to Offer Themed Housing

August 5, 2013

Valley City State University will offer themed housing for the first time this fall. After surveying students, housing director Stephanie Roelfsema said students showed most interest in having education and health and wellness themed housing.

Roelfsema said, "(Themed housing) is kind of a spin off of living/learning communities," but this is a little more informal that will involve programming each month relating to the different themes.

Milender Named BC Extension Agent

Sue Milender, 15-year foodservice director at Valley City Public Schools, has been chosen as the new Barnes County extension agent for family and consumer sciences, said Randy Grueneich, extension agent.

Thursday Grueneich said Milender is slated to come on board Aug. 12, replacing Ellen Bjelland, who left the Barnes County job May 31. Milender will become the new North Dakota State University's Barnes County extension agent.

Sibley Teen Attends RYLA Camp

Macey Schuler of Sibley recently spent a week at The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus.

Schuler was sponsored by the Valley City Rotary Club.

Valley City's Piller Theater Curtain Hung

August 5, 2013

The old Piller Theater curtain, in storage since the 1960s, was hung Friday in the Valley City Parks and Recreation Center gymnasium.

Friday Becky Heise and husband Daryl Heise – with the help of two lifts, a rope and pulley – lifted and mounted the old advertising curtain to a spot high on the wall in the gymnasium.

Pages 3, 4, and 5 from the July 24 newspaper were accidently printed a second time in the July 31 paper. Look for missing content, including news and advertisements, in Thursday's paper. The Times-Record regrets the error.

Myers Wins 5 Major Awards

Rural Kathryn's Kendra Myers ended up with four grand champion awards and one reserve grand champion award at the 2013 North Dakota State Fair.
Myers, who turns 11 Monday, and her purebred Simmental heifer “Daisy,” were named Grand Champion in the Junior Simmental Show, Grand Champion Simmental in the North Dakota Junior Points Show Association, and Grand Champion in the 4-H show.

UPDATE: Names Released in SUV Rollover

July 31, 2013

Valley City police say the 2005 Honda CRV that rolled following a 2-vehicle accident Monday around 5 p.m. was driven by Duane Huibregtse, 70. The SUV rolled after being struck on the passenger side by a 2000 Volkswagon Beetle, driven by Karen Bruyea, 48.
The vehicles collided at the intersection of Third Avenue and Second Street Northeast.
Bruyea was transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Statewide Crime Statistics Released

July 31, 2013

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem Tuesday released North Dakota’s crime statistics for 2012. The annual Crime Report is compiled from information reported by local law enforcement agencies across the state.
“Based on our experience here (in Barnes County), our numbers are up from last year, and last year's numbers were up from the previous year,” said Barnes County States Attorney Lee Grossman.
