Herman Stern Honored Posthumously

Thursday, North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple presented the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award to the family of Herman Stern, a businessman and visionary who managed the Straus Clothing Store in Valley City for 70 years and made numerous contributions to the state, including establishing the North Dakota Winter Show and founding the Greater North Dakota Association, now known as the Greater North Dakota Chamber (GNDC).

Stern, who passed away in 1980, is the 40th recipient of the award, the state’s highest commendation for its citizens.

2 VC Businesses Get Rebates for Installing Energy-Efficient Lighting

John Deere Seeding Group and Shopko Hometown each received rebate checks Wednesday morning for participating in Valley City's supplemental power supplier Missouri River's Energy Services' Bright Energy Solutions program. Both companies installed new energy-efficient lighting in their facilities, so the city rewarded them with a rebate.

Charges Dropped Against Dog Shooter

Charges against a Valley City man who shot a pit bull dog within city limits last summer have been dismissed.
Nathan Preston faced criminal charges for the late-July incident when he fired a weapon at two pit bulls.

Frozen Pipes Increase In VC

VC Students to Attend State MATHCOUNTS Competition

Four Valley City Junior High students will head to the state MATHCOUNTS competition in Bismarck on Monday. The Junior High MATHCOUNTS team, under the direction of Trevar Hansen, Valley City Junior Senior High School math teacher, took first in the county and regional competition before advancing to state.

Starion Financial founder and chairman Frank Larson will receive the Greater North Dakotan Award during a presentation at the Governor’s Business Forum April 15 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, said Mary Heath of Valley City, a high school classmate of Larson. LaMoure Woman Writes Book Set in Barnes County

Hazel Mattice, who grew up on a Barnes County farm, has written a book set in the area. "The Dark Days: The Age of Them," which takes place in Barnes County and Valley City, was recently published and available online through Amazon for $2.99.
The 300-page science-fiction thriller story is based on a location near Valley City.
