A block party in front of Central Avenue Health Mart Pharmacy in Valley City is happening now until 8 p.m. The event features cars, store specials, food and a DJ.

Wes Anderson, curator of the Barnes County Historical Society Museum, provided this photograph taken of of the 1975 Valley City Fire Department. Firefighters had this group photograph taken from a height while standing in the midst of fire department vehicles.

Hunter education course, sponsored by the Barnes County Wildlife Club, begins tonight from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Rhoades Science Center, 101 College Street Southeast, Valley City. The course is free and will be held June 15, 16, 18, 23 and 25 from 6-9:30 p.m. For more information, call (701) 845-3211 or (701) 490-3211.

The Valley City Public School Board meets at 5 p.m. in the board meeting room at the Central Administration Building.

Image and Beautification members beautify Valley City by placing planters around the town. From let to right are Terry Lebahn, Jon Aus, James Buhr and Lenore Lebahn. The Open Door Center then volunteers to water the flowers throughout the summer. Anyone who would like to join the volunteer committee are asked to contact Sharon Buhr at (701) 845-5197.

The Valley City Public School Board election will be held at the Central Administration Building, 460 Central Avenue North, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters have the chance to elect either incumbent Rick Ross or challenger Rich Schueneman to the board.

The Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals membership meeting will be held at Chautauqua Park at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to participate. The event also features a best dressed pet contest, lemonade, cookies, drawings and prizes as well as a blessing of the pets by Candy Rasmussen.

Throwback Thursday: Young Romance

Tim Koehler, Valley City High School graduate in 1969, and Karla Koehler Severson, VCHS graduate in 1967, submitted this photo of their parents Russell Koehler, VCHS class of 1943, and Doris Macdonald, VCHS class of 1945.

The photo was taken at the home of Dr. A.C. Macdonald on Fifth Avenue Northwest in Valley City in the fall of 1943 when Russell was home on leave after completing basic training in the U.S. Army, Tim and Karla said.

Russell then departed from New York City via ship to London and onward to participate in the invasion of France, Belgium and Germany.

BREAKING: Two Arrested for John Deere Theft

Two Valley City residents have been arrested and stand accused of passing a fraudulent check and stealing other items from the John Deere Seeding Group.

Jessica Gamel, 28 and William Fisher, 31, face charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
