A little over a year ago, the Times-Record told you about a new coffee shop and community center that was slated to open in Valley City. What made The Vault Coffee Shop and Bakery unique was its self-service pay-by-honor-system business model. Eight months after its grand opening in October, The Vault has gained international attention for its unique business model, which seems to be working.
The Valley City Barnes County Public Library was packed with children Monday afternoon for a special Library Fun Day from 4 to 6 p.m. More in Wednesday's issue of the Times-Record.
After nearly a half-century as an auctioneer, Tony Heinze of Dazey, was recently honored with an induction into the World Wide College of Auctioneering Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed upon him after a lifetime of selling everything from antiques to livestock. "It's a top-notch, first-class honor," said Heinze.
Two Valley City women are starting a fee-free flea market, and the first is set for Saturday, July 12 outside of Bowen Welding north of Valley City. Jodi Rae Ingstad, who is starting the market with Sheree Bowen, said anyone who has something to sell is encouraged to set up a booth.
Vendors can begin setting up at 7 a.m. and customers can arrive then for shopping and fellowship.

Winds gusting to 45 miles an hour or so over much of North Dakota, including the Valley City area, led to road-related problems.
Plenty of events are planned around the area for the 4th of July holiday weekend.
Sanborn Fire Department's 49th annual 4th of July celebration begins with a parade at 10 a.m. followed by kids races. The pickup pull will be held at 11 a.m. at the derby grounds with a demolition derby following the pull around 2 p.m.The entry fee for the derby, which includes one pit person, is $75. The Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce is organizing a community photograph in front of The Vault Coffee Shop Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.
Rita Weber, a pedestrian struck by a pickup truck last week in Valley City, died of her injuries Monday afternoon.
Weber, 92, was walking along Central Avenue North and was in the crosswalk at Central Avenue North and Sixth Avenue Northwest when she was struck by a Ford F-150 driven by by Robert J. Mittleider, 32, of Valley City on Sunday, June 22.
According to Valley City Police Department Chief Fred Thompson, Weber was transported to Mercy Hospital by ambulance, and later transported by Life Flight helicopter to Sanford Hospital in Fargo.
The lot at Eighth Avenue SW and Second Street SW where a house owned by Dale Knudson stood until Thursday will soon become a parking lot for new trucks being sold by the Perkins vehicle dealership. More in Monday's issue of the Times-Record.
Gasoline prices have risen in Valley City from about two weeks ago, when the average price for unleaded gas with 10 percent ethanol added was $3.49.9 per gallon. More in Monday's Times-Record.
