Drake Questions Buy-Out Property Rules

Bob Drake believes Valley City lost out when flood buy-out homes were demolished. Had the homes been sold and moved onto other city lots, the city would have benefited from the purchases as well as property taxes once the homes were at new locations.

Valley Youth Choir Performs at Courthouse

The VCSU Community School of the Arts (CSA) Valley Youth Choir, directed by Courtney Pederson, from the Barnes County Courthouse Carol Sing on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Connie Reiten, director of the Community School of the Arts, said on Wednesday that one other CSA ensemble performed, the Valley Voices Women's Choir directed by Dr. Christopher Redfearn, as did the Valley City Troubadours.

Cramer Talks With VCHS Students

U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer spent more than an hour Thursday speaking to students in Brock Carlson's government class at Valley City High School. About 35 students attended, and every seat was filled along with more than a dozen students leaning against walls and sitting on the floor. More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

New Health, Wellness Business Open in VC

A new health and wellness business has opened in Valley City. Wellness at Revelations of Beauty, owned by Kim Costello, features acupuncture treatment as well as aesthetics and beauty services.

"Revelations of Beauty comes from the aesthetics part of my career," Costello said, adding, "the wellness comes from the acupuncture."

Smith Lumber Open at New Location

Smith Lumber's new store is now open for business. New owners Tim and Brenda Durheim, who took over the business in July, have chosen to move to 1525 East Main Street, to expand the business.

An open house is planned for today from 3-7 p.m. so the public can check out the new place. Refreshments and goodies will be served. Brenda said a bigger grand opening celebration will be held in April.

An anonymous local resident provided the Times-Record with this photograph of Barnes County servicemen spending Christmas in Honolulu in 1947 or 1948.

Wage Suit Filed Against VC Super 8 Owner

December 18, 2014

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor is suing the owner of the Valley City Super 8 Motel and several other hotels for allegedly failing to pay minimum wage and overtime rates in North Dakota and Montana.

The complaint says that Bharat "Brian" Patel owes about $100,000 in back wages and $100,000 in damages to front-desk clerks, housekeeping staff and other hotel employees. The case involves 193 workers at 13 hotels.

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

Santa Visits Pledge-a-Thon

August Hochhalter, 4, visited with Santa Tuesday during the Valley City Wellness, Health and Physical Education Center Pledge-a-Thon at the Valley City Parks and Recreation Center. The event was held in an effort to raise funds to close a $4 million gap in funding for the facility.

District 24 Legislators Want School Funding Formula Changed

District 24 Legislators spoke to Valley City School Board members on issues that affect the district Monday during the board's regular meeting.
District 24 Sen. Larry Robinson and Rep. Dwight Kiefert told school board members it is a top priority for them to change the state K-12 funding formula that was passed during the 2013 legislative session. More in Wednesday's Times-Record.
