Main Street To Be Closed For Month

Work on a second Sheyenne Riverbank Stabilization project along Main Street will begin Monday, Jan. 14.
According to Erik Gilbertson of city engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson, the contractor will be installing steel sheeting to repair erosion that has taken place along the Sheyenne River. Main Street in Valley City will be closed for about one month. Traffic will be detoured to Second Street Northwest from Fifth Avenue Northwest to Central Avenue.
Access to businesses will be maintained during construction work.

County Addresses 9-1-1, Rural Fire Department

The Barnes County Commission voted to terminate its contract with Valley City for 9-1-1 services during its regular meeting on Tuesday. Also, the commission, which did not formally approve a pay and benefits package for 9-1-1 dispatchers who may become county employees, did instruct emergency manager Kim Franklin to make employment offers to dispatchers using wage and benefit proposals she made to the commission.
Also, county commissioners discussed agricultural property tax increases with zoning coordinator Betty Koslofsky.

Valley Troubadors Hoping to Increase Membership

The Valley Troubadors are looking to increase membership as they begin practice for their spring concerts, director Lance Dreveky said.
Kirk Dockter, who joined the Troubadors two years ago, said on a good night, the singing group can usually get 18 people together, but "we would like to see numbers grow."
"We'd really just like to appeal to people in the community who like to sing," Dockter said. "Because it's a lot of fun; it's a blast."

County Resumes 9-1-1 Plans

Barnes County Commissioners voted to send notice to Valley City regarding termination of the existing 9-1-1 contract during their regular meeting on Jan. 8.

According to State’s Attorney, Lee Grossman, the old contract, which dates from the 1990s, needed to be updated regardless of whether the 9-1-1 system is taken over by Barnes County.

The current contract, as it is written, will end on July 16.

Commissioners also considered pay and benefits for city employed 9-1-1 dispatchers who may become county employees if Barnes County takes over day-to-day operations of the 9-1-1 system.

NDWS Announces ND Ag Hall of Fame Inductees

The North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame Committee has selected Bill Gross of Cleveland, N.D., and Dick and Theresa Tokach of Mandan, N.D., as 2013 inductees into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame.

City Reconsiders Building Permit Fees

The Valley City City Commission decided Monday during its finance meeting to consider reconstituting building permit fees in Valley City.

“In 2004, the city voted to eliminate all fees on building permits in the city,” Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said.

That vote remained in effect for six years, which has expired, so now the commission is able to consider reconstituting building permit fees.

St. Kate’s Seeks Helpers

St. Catherine’s Church in Valley City is seeking volunteers for its largest fundraiser for its faith-based programs Jan. 23.

Debbie Carpenter, administrative assistant, said there are various shifts open, and people are especially needed to assist with clean, which begins after the supper at 7 p.m.

She said the church also needs people to waitress tables, run games in the gym, and help with “odds and ends things.”

Prep Underway for ND Winter Show

Women’s Division board members are hard at work preparing for the annual North Dakota Winter Show that runs March 5 to 10 in facilities on Winter Show Road.

Board President Mary Ann Leier said this year’s board members are Marie Baumgartner, Mary Ann Berntson, Joan Carlblom, Leier, Karen Overn, Joy Berntson, Lois Bjornson, Coni Horsager, Carole Miedema.

Area Gun Sales Up

Area gun sales and applications for concealed carry permits are up, possibly as a result of new legislation recently introduced in the U.S. Senate that would ban assault-style weapons.

Last month, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced a bill that would stop the sale, transfer, importation and manufacturing of many assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Valley Drug Converts Videos to Digital

Valley Drug in Valley City recently acquired a North Dakota-based program called Zoovio that transcodes video tape and allows users to watch them on any internet connected device.

Zoovio has the ability to digitize 47 different types of video tape including VHS. A user can then access their videos from any internet connected device including smart phones, tablets, computers and televisions.
