VCHS Snow Week Royalty Introduced

The 2013 Snow Week Royalty at Valley City High School are (left to right, back to front): Devon Liljenquist, Kyle Knutson, Steven Horner, Cassidy Wendler, Destiny Winkler and Michaela Scherr.

Activities for Snow Week, Jan. 28-Feb. 2, include a hallway decorating contest and pep rally with coronation at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

First Community Credit Union Moving

The First Community Credit Union in Valley City will soon have a new home. Land has been purchased on East Main Street, on the east side of Essentia Health, that will soon be the location of a new building for the bank branch.

Steve Schmidt, president, said they closed on the purchase in December, and “our intentions are to break ground this spring.” The company is negotiating right now with a general contractor.

Blonde on the Prairie: Wrong is Wrong, Right is Right

That mother of mine didn’t spank us, whip us, paddle us or slap us. I just remember her baby blues turning boogie-man black with “the look.” You know the look. Your wife probably gives it to you when you leave the toilet seat up. I give that husband of mine the look when he’s talking on the phone to someone and discloses something that shouldn’t have been disclosed. It’s a spiritually reckoning thing-the look, it is. It is a visual prompt to let you know you’re wrong. People don’t use the look unless there is a wrong lingering near.

My (Elevated) Life: If the Shoe Fits

I love shoes. Any kind of shoes, sneakers, flats, boots, whatever. But my first love is high heels. I own heels in every color and shape. I have purple stilettos, black wedges, and pink pumps. I own shoes with round toes, flat toes, peep toes, and toes so pointed I had to buy a size larger to accommodate my foot.

My obsession with shoes started early. When I was little, I had foot problems and had to wear ugly orthopedic shoes. I always had two pairs, one in black and one in brown.

Nutrition Class for On the Move Set for Feb. 7

Nutrition, Heart Disease, Cholesterol and You, a 1-1/2 hour class sponsored by Barnes ON THE MOVE, will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Feb. 7, in the Valley City Public School Administration Building, 460 Central Avenue North in Valley City. Everyone is welcome.

The class is free for ON THE MOVE members, $6 for non-members with scholarships available.

BC Parks Have Profitable 2012

Barnes County Parks, primarily Clausen Springs Recreation Area and Little Yellowstone Park made more than $26,000 in revenue in 2012 making it a record year.

VC’s Rotary Club Pancake Dinner a Hit

A steady stream of people including seniors, adults and children streamed into the Valley City Rotary Club’s annual Pancake Dinner Tuesday evening at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

After diners were initially served a meal of pancakes, sausages, syrup, and a choice of coffee, water or milk, Rotary Club members went table to table offering seconds to those who wanted more, along with pouring coffee.
The meal was served from 5 to 7 p.m.

“It was very successful,” said Dick Gulmon, a community affairs committee member of the Rotary and an organizer of the event.

VC Ranked Top Place to Raise Kids in ND

With a growing oil patch in western North Dakota and the Fargo-Moorhead area expanding, the entire state of North Dakota has been recognized for its growth and low unemployment numbers lately. According to two articles published in the Times-Record Forbes recently ranked North Dakota third on their annual Best State for Business and Careers list, and in November North Dakota was ranked the best run state in the nation by the annual 24/7 Wall Street study.

Yet another city in the state has been recognized for its excellence — and this time, it’s right here.

County Holds Regular Meeting

The Barnes County Commission approved allowing Theresa Will, Executive of City-County Health, to purchase new video conferencing equipment using funds from the Center for Disease Control for the City-County Health Department during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

According to one of the CDC’s stipulations, equipment purchased with CDC funds can only be used by the health department. Currently, other departments use the equipment including the Barnes County office of the North Dakota State University Extension Service.

December Blood Drive Successful

Valley City blood drive coordinator Pastor Dan Forsberg and the Trinity Lutheran Church have sponsored a successful blood drive. The two-day drive held in Valley City on Dec. 20 and 21 saw 94 people volunteer to donate blood and 83 were able to give. Twenty-eight people gave blood on the automated 2RBC machine which collects two units of red blood cells during the donation, so a total of 111 products were collected. One of the donors gave blood for the first time.
