BEK Gets $6M to upgrade BC Broadband

BEK Communications of Steele, N.D., will soon sponsor “meet and greet” session with Barnes County residents after the company received two grants totaling $6 million to bring broadband Internet to portions of rural southern and northern Barnes County without the service. More in Thursday's issue.

Christmas Shopping with Cops

Santa, Cops and Kids wrapped up another successful year Tuesday with about 40 kids taking part in an evening of festivities.
For the 14th year, the Valley City Police Department, under the guidance of Sergeant David Swenson, organized the event to help out children who had endured some kind of hardship in the previous year.

VCSU, Mercy Each Receive $2.3M

December 18, 2013

Mercy Hospital and Valley City State University have each received a $2.53 million gift from the estate of Leonard and Marjorie (Dreis) Wright of Mukilteo, Wash, said VCSU Foundation Board member Phil Mueller Wednesday.
Valley City State University received a $2.53 million gift to the VCSU Foundation as did Mercy Hospital.

BC Approves CAD Purchase

Meeting Tuesday, Barnes County commissioners voted 4-1 to purchase a Computer Aided Dispatch System with a county cost of $171,041. More in Wednesday's issue.

Martineck Named Future SA

Barnes County Commissioners Tuesday appointed Carl Martineck new states attorney effective Feb. 15 until the next election after current State's Attorney Lee Grossman submitted his official resignation as of Feb. 14. More in Wednesday's issue.

Barnes County Helps ND Get Top Rating in Protecting Kids from Tobacco

Efforts by Barnes County residents helped make North Dakota the leading state in the nation in protecting kids from tobacco. A report released by a coalition of public health organization says North Dakota ranks first in the nation in funding programs to prevent kids from smoking and helping smokers quit.

Pro-life Contest Winners Announced

Valley City Right to Life recently sponsored an essay contest and awarded $100 for first place and $50 for second place for both junior high and senior high categories. Contestants submitted an essay addressing the statement: “Why I am Pro-life.”
