NDCF Accepting Grant Applications

July 25, 2013

The North Dakota Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for grants from its Unrestricted Fund. Eligible organizations in the state include those designated by the IRS Code as 501(c)(3) non-profit tax exempt groups or government agencies, such as a park district or school district.
Alicia Hoffarth, resource development specialist with the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp., said Wednesday local non-profits seeking grants should check out the foundation's grants from its unrestricted fund to see if they are eligible.

Skonseng Looks Forward to Bishop's Visit

Monsignor Dennis Skonseng, pastor of Valley City's St. Catherine Catholic Church, said Tuesday, "I am thankful and joyful to have a new bishop."
Bishop John Folda, the newly ordained bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, will speak at “Faith through the Ages” events July 30 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City and Aug. 14 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks.
The presentations begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet Bishop Folda.

Kathryn Girl Keeps Busy

Bethany Reiten of Kathryn stays incredibly busy for a 12-year-old.
Today Reiten plans to sell homemade blizzards and have a kiddie fish pond at Crazy Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Dancing Wildflower Salon on Central Avenue in Valley City.

Wimbledon Response Team Gets $5K

Alliance Pipeline Community Investment program has donated to the Wimbledon Quick Response Unit to support education and training. Evan Reimers, pipeline technician in the Wimbledon location, presented Bob Everson, squad leader, a check for $5,000 in Wimbledon on July 16. Funds received will be used to train new volunteer emergency medical responders who completed and passed the course. The newest members of the response unit are Mary Plumb, Wimbledon and Dale Undem Leal, N.D.
Everson said, "I think (the donation) is great — it's very generous of them."

VC Chem Teacher Visits Ghana

July 23, 2013

While in Accra, Ghana for exercise Western Accord 2013, 1st Lt. Matt Nielson and "JJ" Fankhanel, 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, North Dakota National Guard, befriended Noble Kofi Nazzah, a local teacher who was a senior prom chaperone at the hotel where the Soldiers were staying. Fankhanel works with special needs students at Pelican Rapids High School in Pelican Rapids, Minn., and Nielson teaches chemistry at Valley City High School in Valley City.

Luke Endorsement a Misunderstanding?

A misunderstanding between Aspen Exteriors, a Minnesota-based construction doing storm damage repair in Valley City, and Valley City Commissioner Madeline Luke, may be just that – a misunderstanding.
During a recent meeting of the Valley City Commission, Luke told other commissioners and the gallery that she heard the company was using her name for endorsement purposes, and she did not give them permission to do so.

Debbie Gabel Memorial Ride Set for Saturday

The 5th annual Debbie Gabel Memorial Motorcycle ride, along with a raffle and street dance, will be held Saturday, July 27, in Valley City.
Rocky Gabel, Valley City, organized the event in honor of his wife, Debbie Gabel, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2009. Last year, approximately 200 people participated in the motorcycle ride.  Net proceeds of the events benefit Hospice of the Red River Valley.

BCN Construction Behind; Students Will Begin at East, West Campuses

The Barnes County North School Board voted Monday during a special meeting to start school on time this year despite construction on the new centralized campus being behind.
The board met with officials from MBA Construction, parents and patrons Monday at the Spiritwood school to discuss options. Following a recommendation from school administration, the board unanimously voted to begin school on its regularly-scheduled start date of Aug. 27; although, students will be divided into both the east campus near Rogers and west campus in Wimbeldon.

Trzpuc in Miss ND Preliminary

Kathryn resident Emily Trzpuc competed in a preliminary for the Miss North Dakota title recently in the Montpelier High School gymnasium.
Thirteen young women from across the state competed for the titles of Miss Fort Abercrombie, Miss Peace Garden, and Miss James River Valley. Trzpuc and other contestants were each awarded a $100 scholarship. The winner of the Fort Abercrombie title received a $2,000 scholarship and the winners of the Peace Garden and James River Valley titles each received a $500 scholarship.

DNP Unveils New Logo

The Dakota Nursing Program faculty and students recently officially revealed their new logo.
Timing for the new logo matches up with planned changes this fall when the program its lab and office area to Valley City State University in the renovated portion of the thirdfloor of the Rhoades Science Center.
