Opatz, Hart Take First In Soap Box Derby

June 10, 2013

Valley City's Central Avenue North was lined with hundreds of people Saturday for the Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby.
Scott Crump, president of the new Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby Club said Annie Hart won first place in the super stock competition and Jarin Opatz took first place in the stock division.

VC Native Faces Rape Charges

A former Valley City resident and mayor of Halstad Minn., Steve Sortland, was charged with first-and third-degree sexual conduct in Norman County, Minn.,late last week.
Sortland, a 1988 Valley City High School graduate, was arrested on May 27 in Norman County during a traffic stop.

VC Singer Greg Hager Releases 7th Album

A Valley City singer and songwriter released his seventh album in four years this week. Country and gospel singer Greg Hager's latest album Cowboy Way is now available for purchase on his web store and for download on iTunes.
Hager has released seven original albums since 2009, including four country-western albums, two gospel albums and a Christmas album. Hager's daughter Hannah makes an appearance on his latest CD, singing on the tracks "He Taught Me to Yodel" and "I Will Run," a song Hager wrote for his daughter.

Jefferson Coming To Valley City

Thomas Jefferson will be coming to North Dakota Oct. 15 in the body of North Dakota historian Clay Jenkinson, who portrays the famous third U.S. president each week on Prairie Public Radio.
Jenkinson is being brought to town by Valley City State University's “What In The World Is Going On?” series, the Barnes County Historical Society and the Valley City Public Schools.

9-1-1 Dispatch, One More Roadblock

Barnes County's move of the 9-1-1 dispatch center hit another snag recently. According to Valley City Building and Fire Inspector Dave Andersen, Barnes County needs to obtain a building permit and have an asbestos inspection done before remodeling space in the Barnes County Courthouse basement for a new dispatch center.

VC Schools Recommend Washington Principal

The interviewing committee for the elementary building principal position plans to recommend Chad Lueck to the Valley City Public Schools school board to receive a contract to be the new principal at Washington Elementary School.
Superintendent Dean Koppelman said in an email Wednesday that Lueck is originally from Lidgerwood, N.D. and graduated from Valley City State University with a major in Elementary Education.  He received his Master's Degree from Tri-College University in Educational Leadership.

Class Helps Local Cancer Patients Look, Feel Better

Local women who are faced with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments are fortunate to have Look Good Feel Better classes available right here in Valley City. Each month classes are held at the Sheyenne Care Center where Terry Moritz, a local licensed cosmetologist, and eight-year volunteer with the American Cancer Society offers her time and professional talent to women who attend the class.

St. Catherine Parish Catholic Daughters of the Americas are holding their annual Rhubarb Run Fundraiser on Saturday, June 8.

Elevate Within Announces Gingerbread Competition

June 5 is National Gingerbread Day, and in recognition, Elevate Within Peer Group would like to announce a gingerbread design competition in late November.
The competition, which has several sponsors, will consist of an adult and student competition. Entry will be free and open to anyone, according to Reverend Jennifer Pickard of Elevate Within.
Winners of the competition will be announced and prizes awarded on December 7 at the annual Holiday Extravaganza in Valley City. Regulations and additional information will be available in September.
