Basement Cleaning Kits Offered

June 25, 2013

Barnes County has free kits available to help residents safely clean up basements flooded by Thursday's nearly 7-inch rainfall.

The kits include a bucket, a mop head, gloves, garbage bags, squeegees, antiseptic cleaner, bleach, laundry detergent, safety goggles, sponges and rags.

Kits can be picked up at the emergency services office in the Barnes County Highway Department building on Airport Road from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Call 845-6678 for information.

Practice Fireworks Safety July 4

Beginning Thursday, Valley City will likely be filled with the sights and sounds of fireworks, with the pyrotechnics being legal for sale from then through July 5.
Valley City Fire Department Chief Gary Retterath said Monday fireworks can be sold from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. those days, and those buying them must be at least 12 and be able to prove the age. Retterath said most sellers require a note testifying to the age signed by a parent.

No More Foss Drug: Pharmacy Bought Out

A long-standing pharmacy in Valley City is under new ownership. NuCara Pharmacy, based out of Conrad, Iowa, bought out Foss Drug June 5, manager Janice Berg said. Terry Kristensen was the former owner of Foss Drug. Read the Times-Record for more information on the historical business.

Escaped Prisoner Captured

Matthew Kidd, who escaped from the Barnes County Jail on Thursday, has been captured and is back in jail facing new charges for fleeing. Kidd was found near Fingal with the help of tips and outside law enforcement agencies. For more information on Matthew Kidd, read Wednesday's Times-Record.

Evidence Lost in Flooding

Last week's flooding damaged the basement of the Valley City Law Enforcement Center where evidence in several criminal cases was held. With evidence compromised by flood waters, officials believe some court cases may be lost or dismissed. For more on this story, read Wednesday's Times-Record.

Relay Raises Over $33K

Barnes County Relay for Life co-chair Marge Bessette said the annual cancer fundraiser raised about $33,500 so far this year.
"We are very happy with the amount," she said.
Funds raised benefit the American Cancer Society, which sponsors the Relay, to aid in finding cures and fighting back against cancer.
Mary Dahl, representative with the American Cancer Society, said their goal was to surpass last year's fundraising amount, and "we did that," raising more than the $30,000 raised last year. She expects money will trickle in for at least a week and perhaps throughout the summer.
