Nu Bar Hosting Adult Prom

The Nu Bar in Valley City is hosting an adult prom later this month that will allow patrons to dress up and see a recent remodel at the bar.
Owner Ryan Mathias said the idea of having an adult prom came from a couple of his female employees who thought it was "an excuse for people to have a night where they dress up in the formal and go out on the town and cut loose a little bit."
The free prom, featuring Full Nelson karaoke, will be Saturday, May 18 from 9 to 1 a.m.

Tower City Museum proposed

Sid Hinrichs of Tower City and other members of the Tower City Heritage Society are trying to line up enough sponsors and donors to turn one of the city's historic buildings into a museum.
Hinrichs said he and other Heritage Society members believe they will have plenty of Tower City related items to stock a museum. “Right now at the Tower City Community Center we have a showcase full of stuff from the early 1900s, and an old Sampson fire truck.”

ND Compass Will Track ND Progress

The Center for Social Research at North Dakota State University in collaboration with Wilder Research has launched a new website called North Dakota Compass.
The website is modeled after Minnesota Compass, an award-winning social indicators project led by Wilder Research.

Dispatch to Move to Courthouse

The Barnes County Commission approved moving the 9-1-1 dispatch center to the basement of the Barnes County Courthouse with a 3-2 vote. For more on this story, read Wednesday's Times-Record.

Click It or Ticket

Click it or Ticket is the motto of a seat belt enforcement blitz planned for May 20 through June 2 throughout North Dakota.
According to a news release from the North Dakota Department of Transportation, "To increase seat belt use, law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be conducting overtime enforcement of seat belt laws during a statewide Click it or Ticket campaign."
"We will schedule overtime to enforce traffic safety with an emphasis on seat belts," said Valley City Police Sergeant Dave Swenson.

Planting Finally Underway

Spring fieldwork and planting is finally underway on area farmland.
After being delayed for weeks by cold weather and late spring snow, farmers throughout the area are planting spring wheat and corn as well as picking rocks and applying fertilizer to dry ground.
"We're certainly very late," said Randy Grueneich, North Dakota State University Extension Agent for Barnes County. "If we get wheat in this week we'll be doing very good."

Relay Kickoff Wednesday

The Barnes County Relay for Life will have an official kickoff rally Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Vicky's Viking Room.
According to a press release from the American Cancer Society, "The rally will feature speakers from the community and will honor cancer survivors."
The kickoff rally will officially launch the Relay's fundraising efforts for the year. Community members have the chance to learn about the new events planned for the Relay that will be held on Central Avenue June 21 from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Tower Girl Doodle Champ

Megan Tichy, 14, is an artist. And while her friends and family already knew how talented she was, a doodle contest hosted by Google has catapulted Megan into a world of possible national notoriety.
Last week, Google officials were on hand to award Megan, an eighth-grader at Maple Valley School, first place for her age group in the state for her "Doodle4Google" entry.
For her efforts, Megan won a free trip to New York City and the chance to win a $30,000 college scholarship for herself and $50,000 technology grant for her school.

Can VC Have a Movie Theater Again?

Jennifer Feist, director of development for the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp., said residents in Valley City want a movie theater back, and there are plenty of options for re-establishing one.
The Development Corp. is looking for someone interested in being an owner/operator of a theater, with plenty of options available for location.
Feist said she's also received inquiries about individuals seeking to be silent partners just because they feel the city needs a movie theater again.

Week Designated As Farmers Union Youth Week

North Dakota Farmers Union is celebrating May 5-11 as Farmers Union Youth Week, a proclamation signed by Governor Jack Dalrymple.
Youth week is held each year to recognize the NDFU camping and education programs.
