Commission Awards Grant to NDWS

The Valley City City Commission approved a food and beverage grant of $75,000 for the North Dakota Winter Show during its regular meeting Monday.
The funds will pay for a portion of repairs to roof trusses that were damaged by snow in 2011, and will be used to build horse stalls which could assist in bringing more off-season events to the North Dakota Winter Show Event Center, according to Bobby Koepplin, chairman of the Valley City Visitor's Committee.

Barnes Rural Water gets $4.5 Million

Barnes Rural Water was awarded a grant of $4.5 million from the Water Resources Trust Fund for local projects.
Of that, $3.3 million will go toward connecting new customers within the Barnes Rural Water district, which covers and area from Tower City to Spiritwood and from Sutton to Verona, according to Barnes Rural Water Manager Perry Kapaun.
The cost to lay pipe to connect new customers is $25,000 to $30,000 per mile, said Kapaun. Grant money will be used to offset the cost to provide rural residents with an alternative to well water.

Litchville Man Dies in Rollover

A 71-year-old Litchville man was killed Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle entered a ditch and rolled. Around 3:30 p.m. the man was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Corvette convertible westbound on a straight level portion of paved Barnes County Road 38, about half a mile north of Litchville, when his vehicle gradually drifted into the north ditch, according to a press release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The vehicle then rotated clockwise and rolled. The driver was ejected, and the vehicle and driver came to rest in a soybean field.

Churches, Library Burglarized

Over the past several weeks, several Valley City churches and the Valley City Barnes County Public Library were burglarized with an undisclosed amount of money taken. A break-in attempt was also reported at another church.
Trinity Lutheran Church, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the library were all burglarized the weekend of Sept. 28 and 29 and Faith Lutheran Church was burglarized on Oct. 6. A failed break-in attempt was also reported at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Comedian Planned for VCSU Rendezvous

The second annual Valley City State University Rendezvous is set for October 18, and those in attendance should expect an eventful night beginning with a comedy show and ending with karaoke.
The headlining act this year is comedian Chad Daniels, and opening for him is Fargo-based comedian Jason Jacobson. After their show Big Hammer Karaoke will be set up for those who want to take the stage.

Drake Addresses Bar Fight Concerns

Valley City resident Bob Drake is worried about safety in the city, particularly about an increase in fights outside bars on weekend nights.
Drake addressed the Valley City City Commission during its regular meeting Monday, regarding the possibility of forming a citizen's watch that could assist police in patrolling fight-prone areas.
Originally, the commission agenda read that Drake proposed an armed citizen's patrol, which Drake claimed was a misunderstanding.

Man to Discuss Armed Citizens Watch Patrol at City Meeting Tonight

During this evening's Valley City City Commission meeting, local man Bob Drake plans to discuss an armed citizens watch patrol during a public forum. Commissioners will also discuss road construction projects as well as the preliminary engineering design and construction contract for the Interstate 94 Regional Development Coordior. The commission plans to approve the second and final reading of the 2014 budget.
The meeting will be held at City Hall at 5 p.m.

Wear Orange on Unity Day, Oct. 9

Wear orange and make it end! Bullying, that is. Oct. 9 is Unity Day, and Elevate Within, along with PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center want to stop bullying, and offer creative ways for educators and parents help get the word out that "it's not OK to bully or be bullied."
On Oct. 9, Elevate Within, a local peer support organization headed by Jennifer Pickard, urges everyone to wear orange, whether it's a tee shirt, a bracelet or an orange ribbon, to give bullying victims a show of strength and a day of triumph.

BCBSND Sponsoring Health Insurance Sessions

October 7, 2013

An informational program about changes in health insurance resulting from Obamacare will take place in Valley City Oct. 23, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota.
Other sessions sponsored by BCBSND will also take place in other larger cities throughout the state during the month of October.

Rhoades Science Center Dedicated

To dedicate the renovation and addition of Valley City State University's Rhoades Science Center, several speakers were present at a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house Friday afternoon.
