'Wonka' to bring wonder to Washington

April 12, 2012

"In your wildest dreams you cannot imagine the surprises that await you!" reads the message on Charlie Bucket's golden ticket, which gives him entrance into the Willy Wonka factory and a world of wonder.
Audiences the world over are familiar with the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and now local audiences will have a golden opportunity to see the story told by young local actors.

Earth Day Celebration at Valley City State University

It’s the first Annual VCSU Earth Day Festival will be Wednesday April, 25 6:00pm-9:00pm. It’s free and open to the public.

Earth Day is April 22 and Valley City State University will hold its first annual Earth Day Festival three days later on the VCSU campus.

Venders will offer earth friendly products and demonstrations, they’ll be games for all ages, musical entertainment includes a performance by “Lakota Thunder” an Emmy nominated Native American drum group.

City to be home for 1 more sex offender

Allan Joeseph Cook, 34, is a high risk, registered sex offender who will be living at 1019 5th Ave. Northwest No. 4 in Valley City.

Cook was convicted Feb. 1, 2002 in Barnes County District Court of two Class C Felony counts of sexual assault for engaging in sexual acts with three juvenile females, ages 15 to 17 years old.

Tech center students prepare to compete

With the school year drawing to a close, it is now time for 14 students from the Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center to show off what they’ve learned this year.

SkillsUSA is a nonprofit organization comprised of students, teachers and other members of the educational industry working together to ensure that the nation has and can continue to develop a skilled workforce. The SkillsUSA program includes local, state and national competitions that allow students to demonstrate occupational and leadership skills.

VC’s Lee awarded top rank by National Forensics League

Valley City High School Student Nicholas Lee, under the guidance of Edith Wagar, has earned the degree of Premier Distinction, the National Forensic League’s highest degree of student membership.

A degree of Premier Distinction reflects sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds and service projects.

Students may earn points in six separate categories: speech, debate, congress, service, district and national.

Water board tables dam study

BALDHILL CREEK, N.D. – The Barnes County Water Resource District Board tabled a discussion on supporting a proposed study for a dry dam on the Baldhill Creek after hearing from several landowners in that area who opposed it.

The Baldhill Creek site and another near Cooperstown were identified last summer in a study conducted by West Fargo-based Moore Engineering as two sites that could retain a significant amount of water from entering Ashtabula Lake, which lies upstream from Valley City, behind the Baldhill Dam.

Robinson Recovery Center marks six years

After watching the effects of a methamphetamine epidemic sweep across the state in the middle of the last decade, State Senator Larry Robinson knew something had to be done to alleviate the damage caused by the dangerous drug.

Today, a rehabilitation center bearing Robinson’s namesake is celebrating six years of success in helping treat addictions to meth and other substances.

‘Wait and see’: Fed funding may delay Ninth Avenue

A delay in the passage of a federal highway bill may put a kink in the city’s plans to finish the Ninth Avenue Northwest reconstruction project in a timely manner.

The Valley City City Commission met in a special meeting Friday to nail down its options for the shortened construction window caused by the funding delay, which has already dashed any hopes of finishing the entire project in 2012.
