Deputies Work to Brighten Season

For the second year in a row, deputies with the Barnes County Sheriff’s Department are working to make the holiday season a bit brighter for county families in need.

Deputy Scott Crump said he and fellow deputy Don Fiebiger started Deputy Secret Santas in 2011, to benefit families in Barnes County. “We specialize in families in need with financial burdens.”

ER Nurses Win Award for Tissue Donation Efforts

The emergency room nurses at Mercy Hospital were recently honored for their efforts in talking with families about tissue donation.

The group was given the 2012 tissue partner of the year award from LifeSource, a nonprofit organ and tissue donation organization that serves North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

In October, hospital administrator Keith Heuser attended the North Dakota Hospital Association annual meeting.

Girl Scouts Receives $150,000 Grant

With the help of a $150,000 grant, Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons is creating a Girl Scout camp volunteer delivery program to reignite camping experiences for today’s busy girls.

Through the grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Girl Scouts will create a new training platform for volunteers which will bring camp opportunities into the many communities served by the council.

The grant will benefit Valley City Girl Scouts, said Ann Metli, a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons council, which serves Girl Scouts in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

NuBar Considers Smoke Shelter

During the regular Valley City City Commission meeting Monday, Ryan Mathias, owner of the NuBar in Valley City, presented the commission with his plans to build a windbreak smoke shelter to accommodate his smoking customers when a new law takes place Thursday.

During the regular November election, North Dakota voters approved a smoking ban that would prohibit smoking in all indoor workplaces and 20 feet from any door.

BC Considers 9-1-1 Again

Editor's note: The story that ran in Wednesday's paper incorrectly identified the commissioners that were sworn in at Tuesday's meeting. This article has been updated with the correct names.

Two newly re-elected county commissioners, Cindy Schwehr and John Froelich, were sworn in during the regular meeting of the Barnes County Commissioners on Tuesday.

The commissioners approved a contract with Valley City for a financial split and a return of funds to the county for operations of the 9-1-1 system.

Nazarene Church Depicts Christmas Story

The Christmas story, which is the story of the birth of Jesus Christ as told in the book of Matthew from the Bible, has been told in a variety of ways throughout many cultures and generations.

The Nazarene Church in Valley City is telling the story through the eighth annual “Journey Through Christmas” Dec. 13 and 14 from 7-9 p.m.
The event depicts the Christmas story in six scenes with 30 costumed characters and live animals.

“It is called ‘Journey Through Christmas’ because it is a drive-through experience,” the church said in an email.

Dakota Plains Donates $4K to Soap Box Derby

A brand-new Soap Box Derby Association is off to a flying start with the help of matching donations from the Dakota Plains and Land O’ Lakes Cooperatives.

Monday Rydell Becker, manager of the main Dakota Plains store in Valley City, presented Scott Crump, president of the new Sheyenne Valley Soap Box Derby Association and association Vice President Wes King with a $4,000 check.

Bazaar Helps African Women

On Friday, area residents will have the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping while helping women in East Africa. The Asante Network, a charitable group that markets the crafts of several groups of African women, will hold a Bazaar Friday in the gift shop at the Sheyenne Care Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The bazaar will feature; textiles, including batiks and embroidered pieces that range from wall hangings to clothing and bedding; carvings; vividly colored beaded items including jewelry and household items; and hand woven baskets and mats in an array of colors.

12 Days of Christmas Campaign Starts Thurs.

The holiday season is well underway, and that means people are spending more time shopping. Dacotah Bank in Valley City hopes people in the area will support their local economy by buying their holiday gifts at stores in Valley City.

Dacotah Bank is teaming up with the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce again this year for their campaign to push people to shop locally during the holiday season.

The campaign, which is now called “12 Days of Christmas,” starts Dec. 6 and is held every business day thereafter leading up to Christmas.
