Keith Hovlandâs service during the Vietnam Conflict ended more than 40 years ago, but to him, it still feels like yesterday.
Rhiny Weberâs World War II military service may have been shorter than some of his contemporaries at two years, but during those two years he earned a Bronze Star, three battle stars, an infantry combat badge and a POW medal, and spent six months as a prisoner of war in Germany.
Weber became a U.S. soldier at the age of 20 in December 1943, and took basic and infantry training in Fannin, Texas. He spent his time as a soldier in Italy serving in the infantry with Company F, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Division.
Austin Gordon spent the last ten years serving overseas in three different deployments with the North Dakota National Guard, while attending Valley City State University and raising a family of three with his wife Nicole. He said traveling with the Guard gave him much to learn and much to experience.
Gordon, staff sergeant, was first deployed to Kosovo in 2000, two years after he joined the military. His engineer battalion spent six months there, doing construction on the camp and a little work in the surrounding areas.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have issued a No Travel Advisory for the northwest region of the state due to freezing rain creating glare ice causing hazardous travel conditions. This No Travel Advisory includes areas surrounding Williston, Watford City, New Town, Crosby, Bowbells and Stanley.
I just heard a fella say it and I couldnât agree more. The man said, âIf I have to hear the words âPewâ and âGallupâ used together ever again âI hope it has to do with a horse thatâs passing gas and not political polls!â Smart man, that fella, he is.
I know with some certainty I am maturing. Call me a late bloomer if you must. I am what I am. Iâm just a girl trying to get by another day. Iâm betting you are too. The new mature me isnât going to say a word about the election, the outcome or my opinion on it all. No sir! Iâm going to train my tongue to be wise or die trying.
North Dakota residents are no stranger to dangerous winter driving, and with winter quickly approaching, law enforcement officials remind residents to take precaution during winter travel.
Sgt. Dave Swenson from the Valley City Police Department recommends that people do not have less than half a tank of gas in their vehicle during winter weather, and always travel with an emergency survival kit in the vehicle.
new foundation promises to help local kids with life-threatening illnesses. The Forward Foundation, an organization backed by Bank Forward, may give families of ill children some peace of mind when it comes to meeting the financial burdens associated with extended illnesses. A fundraising event will be held in Valley City on Thursday. Money raised will go toward helping local families.

A total of 79 people volunteered to donate blood, and 66 were able to give during Valley Cityâs blood drive. Fourteen people gave blood on the automated 2RBC machine which collects two units of red blood cells during the donation, so a total of 80 products were collected. One of the donors gave for their first time.
Shirley Dykshoorn is looking for Barnes County residents to apply for grants to help them recover from 2011 flooding damages, she said Wednesday.
Barnes County was awarded a Housing Rehabilitation and Citizen Retention Grant, designed to help various communities and residents to recover from the 2011 flood disaster in North Dakota, said Kimberly Franklin, director of Barnes County Emergency Management.
Dykshoorn said Wednesday Barnes County has been allocated $93,909.31 to assist homeowners to rehabilitate their flood-damaged homes.
The Barnes County Commissioners addressed city concerns regarding changes to the countyâs 911 system at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Valley City City Administrator was present to address the cityâs concerns in regards to the county taking over 911 operations after contracting with the city for 911 operations for more than 20 years.
In other business the County Commission agreed to publish the deadline for applying for county board appointments as Mon. November 26.
