Aug. 31 marks the Valley City Hi-Liners home-opener against the Dickinson Trinity Titans at 7 p.m. at Hanna Field. The game will also be the VC season opener after last Friday's game with Carrington was rained out.
The Hi-Liner Boosters will be throwing a free-will offering hamburger and brat tailgate party prior to the game at 5:15 p.m.
"The Hi-Liner Booster Club will also be conducting a membership drive during this event," said Hi-Liner Activities Director Dan Larson. "These memberships help fund the projects that give back to the youth in our community."
Does anyone in Valley City remember the tale of the trucker who, when traveling east on I-94 through a snowstorm, gave a ride to the ghost of a dead girl who died in a blizzard?
Or can anyone in Fort Ransom recall the tale of âBeaver the Hermit,â who was framed for a murder he did not commit but managed to elude the Sheriff and his posse by hiding out in the Sheyenne River Valley?
I like to play ârememberâ with myself for one day when Iâm not able to I will no longer have a game to play. I believe my mind is capable of many things that Iâve not even tapped in to yet. Phenomenally I know that I have the power to change my mood. Iâve tried it, tested it and found it most successful. For instance, I can be driving in traffic on I-94 when some whipper-snapper begins tailgating me. Iâm not talking about the kind of tailgating where he is back there somewhere. Iâm talking about the kind where heâs either trying to kiss the bumper on the outside of my car or the one in it.
George Gaukler and his partners in Straus Mall Property LLC are well on their way to turning the long-time downtown Valley City landmark back into a centerpiece of the business community.
Gaukler bought the mall in October of 2011 after it lost its last tenant.
By November of 2011 Gaukler had lined up the first new tenant, Professional Eye Care, and had begun expensive renovations.
Gaukler said Thursday âthe spaces are rented to a lawyer and an architect, and the mall is starting to fill up.â

The Barnes County Corrections Center in Valley City is in the beginning stages of procuring the means for rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing of inmates brought to the facility.
âItâs a decision made by the state, not by us,â said Valley City-Barnes County Health District Director Theresa Will on Wednesday.
Will said that the jail currently takes swabs to test for HIV but does not get results for about five or six days, and that those tests are being phased out. So far jail staff has not been trained in using the rapid tests.
JAMESTOWNâWomen who attend a leadership development conference in September will have a rare opportunity to taste food from the Washington, D.C.-based Founding Farmers restaurant.
The first annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) conference kicks off in Jamestown on Sept. 21-22. The conference is one of a variety of educational programs hosted by the Farmers Union for its members.
Carla Edinger, member operations coordinator for North Dakota Farmers Union, said in recent years the Farmers Union has really developed its women development programs.
Heidi Heitkamp, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Sen. Kent Conrad, said Wednesday she believes her race against Republican candidate U.S. Rep. Rick Berg is a tie.
Heitkamp met with the Valley City Times-Record editorial board Wednesday morning.
âI pretty much tell people this is a tied race at this point â Our (D-NPL) internal polls show us slightly ahead, but itâs within the margin of error,â Heitkamp said.

Duggy, âThe Smile in The Skyâ is coming to the Barnes County Municipal Airport Thursday, Sept. 6, and kids of all ages are invited.
The World War II-era DC-3 aircraft will be in Valley City as part of the happenings leading up to the Sept. 8 to 9 Wings and Wheels Air Show at the airport, said Toby McPherson, co-chair of the event with Lori Jury.
McPherson said Tuesday, âItâs a kids dream your dream program â itâs a smile in the sky.â
McPherson said the plane was built in 1943 as a World War II military transport aircraft.
The biggest Labor Day weekend party in Barnes County, the annual Dazey Sodbusters Stampede and Bull-O-Rama, will take place Sunday at the Sibley Crossing on Lake Ashtabula.
This will be the 67th year for the event which has grown steadily to attract 3,000 people in recent years. Each year a Dazey Sodbusters Club member is selected to be honored as âSodbuster of the Year.â This yearâs honoree is Dale Kunze.
Kunze, 70, said he has been involved with the Sodbusters organization for more than 50 years.
About two dozen city and county officials and health care workers met at the Health Education Center at Mercy Hospital for a community health assessment Tuesday morning.
The assessment was organized by the Valley City-Barnes County Health District and Mercy Hospital, and was used to develop a community health improvement plan, a requirement for City-County Health to be an accredited public health district and for the hospital to maintain itâs not-for-profit status.
