Achieve, Open Door Center, tobacco usage and you

Open Door Center is a member of the Barnes County ACHIEVE. ACHIEVE is the acronym for Action Committee for Innovation and EnVironmental Change.

The local partnership was organized in 2010 for the purpose of reducing chronic diseases in Valley City and the surrounding area by pursuing local Policy, Systems and Environment changes that will more effectively promote good health.

The local ACHIEVE partnership brings together many local organizations representing health care, education , commerce, recreation and fitness, nutrition and special populations.

Public Works loaning VC $1M

In a move to solidify the final piece of funding for the upcoming Phase One home buyouts, the Valley City City Commission approved accepting a loan of $1 million from the Public Works electrical department at a special meeting Tuesday.

“We felt that it was time to make a vote on this,” said City Commissioner Matt Pedersen. “The buyout candidates are ready to go.”
“I don’t think we’ve got a choice of where we get the money,” said Mayor Bob Werkhoven, “and the City Attorney has indicated that we are within the law as far as (the loan), so now we can feel our conscience is clear.”

Medora musical starts June 8

The Medora Foundation hopes its annual summer musical and the Medora area will be a popular destination for Valley City people this summer.

The musical, now in its 48th year, takes place in the midst of the North Dakota Badlands near the south unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in southwestern North Dakota.

Foundation board President Randy Hatzenbuhler was touring the state this past week, including a stop Monday in Valley City.

VCSU internships offer career experience

In the working world, there is the age-old argument of the value of experience versus education, but Valley City State University is providing its students an opportunity to gain both through its internship program.

Marcia Foss, VCSU’s Director of Career Services and Internships said the college tries to identify employers who might be able to provide a work experience similar to what the student is studying.

“It needs to be meaningful work, so they’re not just standing at a copier.”

'Wonka' to bring wonder to Washington

Audiences the world over are familiar with the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and now local audiences will have a golden opportunity to see the story told by young local actors.

Earth Day Celebration at Valley City State University

It’s the first Annual VCSU Earth Day Festival will be Wednesday April, 25 6:00pm-9:00pm. It’s free and open to the public.

Earth Day is April 22 and Valley City State University will hold its first annual Earth Day Festival three days later on the VCSU campus.

Venders will offer earth friendly products and demonstrations, they’ll be games for all ages, musical entertainment includes a performance by “Lakota Thunder” an Emmy nominated Native American drum group.
