The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 14 Presents: âJoseph DeMasi: REAL Italian Cookingâ 7PM Thursday March 8 at the Barnes County Museum.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation, AAA North Dakota and the North Dakota Safety Council are once again sponsoring the North Dakota Teen Drivers Traffic Safety Contest, entering its third year. The contest gives North Dakota teens the opportunity to promote traffic safety in their school and community. As an added bonus, first prize contestants are eligible to win up to $750.
A fresh blanket of snow on the ground has set the stage for Valley City State Universityâs newly-formed Winter Sports Club to hold their first annual Winter Fun Fest this weekend.
Those who have been itching to get out in the fluffy stuff can dust off their cross country skis, snowshoes and ice skates to take part in ski races, hikes, snow sculpting, broomball and snow soccer.
Although weather conditions havenât been ideal for the clubâs first winter season, faculty advisor Philip Deger said the Fun Fest will be a good way to kick off the clubâs first big event.

A fire under the engine of a car on 8th Avenue Northwest is believed to be the culprit behind the large plumes of smoke that blanketed the north end of town Thursday evening.
A residential garage was filled with flames, which were quickly knocked down by the Valley City Fire Department, but plumes of acrid smoke billowed from the structure even after the flames had dissipated.
"(The resident) was here, and the garage door was open when the neighbors started to see smoke," said Fire Chief Gary Retterath.
Wednesday was a snow day for many in the region, as 3 to 8 inches of snow fell from a storm that stretched to the southern Great Plains.
The National Weather Service in Grand Forks reported just under 4 inches fell north of Valley City at the Bald Hill Dam beginning late Tuesday evening. That accumulation added to the 6.6 inches that had already fallen over the weekend.
âEverything is pretty much winding down; there might be some flurries but thatâs about it,â said NWS meteorologist Brad Hopkins on Wednesday afternoon.
Area youth will soon have a chance to string up their bows and channel their inner Robin Hood. The Valley City Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering a youth archery class for kids ages 10 to 18 in the basement of the City Auditorium.
âWeâve got a 10-yard range for beginners and a 20-yard range for more advanced shooters,â said Neil Pederson, Barnes County Wildlife Club member and Archery Club Chairman. âWeâve been running (the range) for about 4 years now.â
An altercation at the Valley City VFW Club after midnight on Sunday morning left a Valley City Police Officer on paid administrative leave and wrapped up a wild month for local law enforcement in February.
Officer Randy Schmidt, a 7-year veteran of the VCPD, was off duty when he was involved in an incident with an unidentified woman, but had been working with four other off-duty officers providing security at a Mixed Martial Arts event in the city that evening.
âThe accusation is that he physically assaulted a subject at the VFW,â said interim Police Chief Mark McDonald.
Fire up the roasting pans and grab a few friends -- itâs still not too late to sign up for the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerceâs annual Chili Cook-Off and Community Olympics. The Chamber is bringing the long-standing event back to the North Dakota Winter Show Main Arena on Monday, March 5, and entries are still welcome.
Elaborate booth themes and costumes are part of the fun as local groups and businesses team up to compete for the title of Best Chili, where entries are scored by the distinguished judges on taste, aroma and appearance.

There is a Softball Organizational Meeting for all managers and anyone interested in the Adult 2012 Softball League this summer. The meeting is at the American Legion basement starting at 7 p.m. on Wed., March 7.
