December 21st
Second-graders at Jefferson Elementary school built a Christmas tree Tuesday with toilet paper collected to donate to the Abused Persons Outreach Center. Henrietta Dotting was presented with a life membership from the Order of Eastern Star, North Dakota Grand Chapter on Saturday after more than 82 years of membership. The membership was presented by members of the Woodbine Chapter, to which Dotting is now a member.
Dotting, who will turn 107 in January, joined the organization in 1930. She believes she is the oldest living Eastern Star member.
Dick and Kay Winter of Valley City took first place in the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce’s home decorating contest this year. Dick, who takes pride in his yard, said, “It really makes you feel good; I get a lot of satisfaction on (compliments).”
The home and business decorating contest is held annually by the Chamber. They put out calls for nominations earlier this month. Kay Vinje, office manager for the Chamber, told the Times-Record that anybody can call in and nominate their own home or business or somebody else’s.

Barnes County Extension Agent Ellen Bjelland proposed putting a vending machine containing healthy alternatives to junk food in the courthouse during the Barnes County Commission’s regular meeting on Tuesday.
Currently, two machines are located in the courthouse rotunda, one dispenses Pepsi products and the other Coke products.
The proposed machine would vend healthy foods like sandwiches, milk and healthy snacks as well as Coke and Pepsi products, possibly eliminating the need for the machines that are currently in the rotunda.
Friday, Dec. 21 marks this year’s winter solstice, which is the time the sun is at its southernmost point in the sky. The day has come and gone every other winter without much incident, making way for a rising sun the next day. But this year, some predict the sun won’t have an Earth on which to rise the next day.
Dec. 21, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar, and some people have interpreted that to mean either an apocalypse “end of the world” or a “new world” with new beliefs.
District 24 legislators from both the D-NPL and Republican parties back a proposal by Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple that will significantly strengthen North Dakota’s DUI laws.
Newly elected Republican Rep. Dwight Kiefert and D-NPL Sen. Larry Robinson both said Tuesday they support the governor’s proposal.

The Valley City City Commission decided Monday to allow a credit card option for Public Works. The decision came after a request made by City Administrator David Schelkoph, who said many customers want the option and it would allow the city to accommodate those who might not be able to pay their bills right away.
After doing some research, Schelkoph and other city employees found that using a credit card reader might not be a huge saving financially, but it would save on time and provide a customer service that commissioners agree is beneficial to everyone.
Santa Cops and Kids, a program sponsored by the Valley City Department, paired local law enforcement officers and firefighters with children who endured rough circumstances during the past year for an evening of shopping for Christmas gifts for the kids’ families.
The event included supper at Pizza Corner, a parade of lights and sirens to Shopko, shopping, and wrapping gifts before Santa made an entrance at the Valley City Police Department with gifts for the kids.
The children each were given $100 in donated money to spend on their families during the event.

First Community Credit Union hosted a food and toy drive this holiday season for deserving families and organizations within the local area.
FCCU members, employees, and community members were invited to participate in the event. People of all ages brought in new or slightly used, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items to the First Community Credit Union branch. FCCU has donated the items to the Barnes County Food Pantry and the Mitten Tree.

North Dakota’s Parks and Recreation Department revealed Monday that the 2013 annual vehicle permit for North Dakota state parks will recognize the 30th anniversary of the Fort Ransom State Park “Sodbuster Days” event.
Jerry Nordick, chairman of the association board, said Monday members learned of the honor at the association’s recent Christmas party.
