Valley City's school lunch program has been recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture as one of the healthiest, nutrition-minded programs in the country. Meanwhile, the US House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that will continue to allow federally funded school lunch programs to consider pizza a vegetable.

-Mercy Hospital Foundation will host the Festival of Trees at the Eagles, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

-The regular monthly meeting of the Barnes Rural Water District for November will be changed from the last Wednesday of the month to 6:15 today at the district office, 421 West Main St., Valley City.
The Barnes County Salvation Army will begin its 2011 Bell Ringing Campaign on Nov. 25, with Joe Lunde and Dave Carlsrud as new kettle drive co-chairmen. Familiar red kettles and cheerful bell-ringers will appear at local stores on Black Friday to collect donations, and if you've ever wanted to be one of the smiling kettle drive faces, now is your chance to step up.
In an early-morning meeting that lasted only a few minutes, the Valley City City Commission approved Resolution No. 1818 by unanimous vote Wednesday morning.
The final draft of the resolution contained more specific language about the Tolna Coulee Control Structure, as well as the proposed West Stump Lake Gravity Flow Emergency Channel on Devils Lake. The resolution states that the commission will support the two structures, assuming they maintain the elevation of Devils Lake at 1,458 feet above mean sea level, allowing the lake to function as a reservoir up to that point.
The City-County Health District Board will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Commission Chambers at the Barnes County Courthouse.

At Wednesday night's meeting of the Barnes County North School Board, members discussed forming a building authority to pay for the construction of a new school, or to continue using the current campuses.
The board encouraged BCN district residents to offer feedback on the proposal.
A special meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Spiritwood school building for public opinion and possible action by the board.
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — The former longtime Valley City police chief who retired after a months-long dispute with a city administrator who has since left town now plans to take on the mayor, who a group of residents wants forced from office.
November 16th
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota got its first real taste of winter weather Tuesday, with some areas getting heavy snow and others strong winds.
The National Weather Service reports that many northern parts of the state got several inches of snow, with 6 inches falling in Minot. Law enforcement agencies in the area reported more than 100 incidents of vehicles sliding into ditches or other vehicles.
November 15th
An temporary easement drawn up by States Attorney Brad Cruff and signed by Barnes County Commission President Cindy Schwehr releases the county from any liability on four power poles that are perilously close to the pavement on County Road 20.
The poles are approximately four feet from the roadway, and are temporary replacements for poles that were damaged in a fierce windstorm during the early morning hours of July 15.

- Pack the HAC: Sponsored by Valley City Public Schools, the VCHS Student Council, and local businesses. The event aims to fill the HAC floor with non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Barnes County Food Pantry. "Pack" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hi-liner Activity Center.
