Barnes County Commission shuffles 2012 portfolios

The Barnes County Commissioners, Cindy Schwehr, John Froelich, Rodger Berntson, Phil Leitner and Eldred Knutson, re-orgainzed the County Commission's portfolio schedule for 2012 at the commission meeting on Tuesday.

The 2012 portfolio holders for the county departments and boards are:

Auditor - Leitner
Data processing - Leitner
City-County Health - Schwehr
Clerk of court - Berntson
County agent/extension - Froelich
Highway dept./county engineer - Schwehr, Berntson
County park - Leitner, Knutson
Building and grounds - Berntson
Emergency management - Knutson

"Introduction to Baby Sign Language" will be offered at Headstart in Valley City from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Class will cover the basics of using simple sign language to facilitate early communication with infants and toddlers. Call the Parent Resource Center at 845-8528 to register for this free class.

Thursday, December 8
Wildlife photographer Tom Ulrich will give a presentation 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Foss Music Building. He will be presenting a collection of his wildlife/nature images from his extensive travels.

Dalrymple commends Microsoft and Hitachi Consulting on Fargo-based business venture

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple today joined officials from Microsoft and Hitachi Consulting to announce a Fargo-based business venture between the technology companies that will create new North Dakota jobs and business opportunities.

“This Fargo-based venture will create new jobs and great opportunities for business growth in North Dakota,” Dalrymple said. The decision by Microsoft and Hitachi Consulting to expand their business relationship in Fargo is a testament to North Dakota’s strong business climate and our quality workforce.”

Largest cattle show in North Dakota kicks off

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Motels in Valley City are booked as what is billed as the largest cattle show in North Dakota kicks off Thursday.

Nearly 500 cattle will be showcased during the annual North Star Classic on the North Dakota Winter Show grounds.

Winter Show manager Dawn Riley said the cattle show includes food, exhibits, musical entertainment and other events through the weekend.

State Game and Fish Dept. stresses ice safety for winter

As ice fishing season nears and snowmobilers wait to fire up their engines, North Dakota Game and Fish Department Education Coordinator Jeff Long stressed the importance for both snowmobilers and ice fishermen to be safe when venturing out onto a frozen lake or river.

"We're always making efforts to promote safe ice every year," Long said. "Particularly at the beginning and towards the end of the season when the ice is new and possibly thin, and then towards the end when it gets potentially mushy and not as strong anymore."

Ross cleared of financial wrongdoing by BCI

In a report released Monday by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, former Valley City Police Chief Dean Ross was cleared of accusations that he mismanaged several police department funds.
While the report did find that Ross's financial activities were "unusual, and likely not compliant with generally accepted accounting practices," it found nothing indicating his actions were criminal in nature.
"I am very pleased and gratified that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation report verifies what we've been saying all along and at the all the press conferences," said Ross of the findings.

VC water groups to meet Wednesday

Members of People to Save the Sheyenne and the Adhoc Downstream Group will hold a public meeting Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Eagles Airie in Valley City.

The public is welcome to discuss the latest developments in combating Devils Lake flooding and how they affect Valley City and downstream communities.

Barnes County Highway Dept. lifts temporary restrictions on county roads

At a special meeting of the Barnes County Commission, Highway Superintendent Kerry Johnson said weight restrictions were being lifted on County Roads 1 near Wimbledon, 22 west of State Highway 1 and 37 on the southeast county line.

Trucks were restricted to six tons per axle on County Roads 1 and 37 and about half a dozen other locations for several months, while County Road 22 was restricted to light traffic only when it was reopened last month following an emergency grade raise.

Barnes County Commission, Park Board to meet Nov. 28

November 25, 2011

The Barnes County Commission will meet 8 a.m., Monday, Nov. 28, in the Commission Chambers at the Barnes County Courthouse to discuss bids for the North Valley Bridge project.

The project includes building a new bridge to the east of the existing North Valley Bridge while keeping traffic open.

The meeting will be followed by a Barnes County Park Board meeting at 9 a.m.
