GOP candidates for U.S. House seat debate in Valley City

Stressing a strong theme of smaller government and reduction in federal spending, five North Dakota GOP congressional hopefuls spoke in front of a live audience of roughly 100 at VCSU’s Vangstad Auditorium Wednesday, Dec. 14.

The university provided the stage for an amicable forum among the Republican candidates for North Dakota’s lone U.S. House of Representatives seat. Sponsored by the District 24 Republicans, the event was the first, and possibly the only, public round table to feature all the contenders  before a nominee is chosen at the state Republican Convention next spring.

Valley City School District reviewing its wellness policy

Valley City Public Schools is reviewing its wellness policy, and school officials are hoping for public involvement in the process.
A rough draft of the policy, compiled from several model policies recommended by the government, will go to administrative council for review. From there it goes through the schools’ 11-member Nutrition Team, made up of made up of parents, students, teachers, administration and the public. Following another review by administration council it goes to the public for review.

Manhunt suspect may change plea

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — A man accused of fleeing a prisoner transport van in North Dakota and sparking a manhunt is scheduled to change his plea to a felony escape charge.

Joseph Megna initially pleaded not guilty. A change of plea hearing and a sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 4 in Valley City, though defense attorney Mark Blumer says things might change before then. He did not elaborate.

GOP House hopefuls to debate at VCSU

The five Republican candidates for North Dakota’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives will debate for the first time Wednesday night on the VCSU campus.

The debate will include Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer of Bismarck; former Department of Commerce Commissioner Shane Goettle of Bismarck/Mandan; state Representative Bette Grande of Fargo; Public Service Commissioner Brian Kalk of Bismarck; and state Representative Kim Koppelman of Fargo.

North Dakota APUC approves 5 funding requests

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — A state Department of Commerce program that helps developers of North Dakota farm products is funding five projects this quarter.

The grants from the Agricultural Products Utilization Commission total more than $170,000.

North Dakota State University is getting the most money — grants of about $60,000 and $25,000 for research on fertilizer and vegetables.

NDSU Feedlot School scheduled

The North Dakota State University Feedlot School has been scheduled for Jan. 24 and 25 at the university's Carrington Research Extension Center.

The course will focus on feedlot production, nutrition, waste management and marketing.

Annual Ag Improvement meeting set for Dec. 13

The Barnes County Ag Improvement annual meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Ag Country Farm Credit Services Meeting Room beginning at 10 a.m.

NDSU Extension Service agronomist Greg Endres will be the opening presentation with "Wheat Fungicide Response and Research Highlights." Maynard Helgaas of Green Vision Energy will also speak on growing beets for bio-fuel.

Absentee ballots available for Jan. 24 recall election

Ballots were made available for the City of Valley City's Jan. 24 recall election on Wednesday morning, and city officials are encouraging registered voters within city limits to pick up their ballots sooner rather than later.

"Basically, we wanted to get the word out so that people do the absentee ballots, because the weather can be so questionable in January, and because we have so many snowbirds," said city administrative assistant Becki Andersen. "It just saves everybody time and postage.
