Barnes County 4-H members who participated in the dog project had a chance to show off their work Friday at the dog show during Barnes County 4-H Achievement Days.
The show began at 5:30 p.m. at the North Dakota Winter Show building. Crowds gathered around to watch the 10 dogs and their owners compete in obedience and showmanship.
The dog show is an annual show held every July during the achievement days.
Ellen Bjelland, Barnes Countyâs 4-H extension agent, said Barnes County is one of the few counties that does a dog show.
HOPE, N.D. â âUnbelievable,â a woman remarked as she inspected a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 retractable convertible. The car, owned by Earl and Connie Behm of Valley City, was one of several dozen in the classic car show during âHope Days.â
Over the the weekend the city of Hope celebrated its annual Hope Days and the 2012 Class Bash reunion of students from Hope, Luverne and Pillsbury.
This yearâs events included a classic car show, 5K run/walk, demolition derby and a Sunday morning golf tournament.

Being a professional bull rider is somewhat of a dream for 20-year-old Clayton Enzminger.
Nearly every weekend, the Steele resident hits the road with friend and travel partner Cole Hermanson to ride in rodeos, including some on the Professional Bull Riding circuit, all across the nation.
The only problem is that the events tend to be far from home.
"There are opportunities that come close, but going to PBRs and pro rodeos, you've got to travel a lot," said Enzminger, who rides as a pro but has yet to ride in a PBR event.
The Valley Twisters Gymnastics Club announced in a release Friday that it has hired Suzanne Fischer as its new head coach/club director.
Fischer is a 20-year coaching veteran who will be moving to Valley City from Branch Gymnastics in Kalamazoo, Mich., where she was the head coach/program director.
âThe Valley Twisters board is very excited that Suzanne is joining our club,â said Amber Olson, a Valley Twisters board member. âWe feel that Suzanne will be a huge asset to our gym with her experience and passion for the sport. We are very excited for her and her family to join our community.â
VC Post 60 Baseball Sweeps Fairmount/Hankinson
The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball team saved its best for the later innings in a double header sweep of Fairmount/Hankinson on the road Thursday.
Post 60 won 11-9 in the first game, then won 13-4 in the second game.
In the first game, Post 60 was down 8-3 entering the top of seventh, but scored six runs in the seventh to go up 9-8.
The inning included doubles by Josh Magnuson and Chase Carpenter, whose hit had two runs batted in and scored the final run of the inning.

There are times in baseball where an error plays little role in the outcome of a game.
But for the Valley City Babe Ruth team, that wasnât the case in a 5-4 loss in the first game of a double header sweep to LaMoure Thursday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field. Valley City also lost 3-1 in a three inning second game.
Approximately one year ago, the Head Injury Association began a peer mentoring program. The purpose of the program is to assist families and individuals who have sustained a brain injury cope with the complexities and impact of this disability from acute care through community re-integration.
Barnes County is among the healthiest counties in North Dakota according to the University of Wisconsin.
The UWâs Population Health Institute recently released its 2012 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps report, which found that Barnes Ranks No. 2 in the âHealth Outcomesâ category, second only to Griggs County. Under âHealth Factors,â Barnes was fifth, behind Bowman, Cass, Griggs and Burleigh.
âI probably donât need to tell anyone here that thereâs a significant flood risk in Valley City. Youâve all lived through it and been through flood fighting efforts,â began Sierra Schroeder of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during a half-hour slide show presentation during a public forum Tuesday.
A light but vocal crowd attended the evening meeting, which was hosted by the Corps and the City of Valley City, that gave residents the opportunity to speak with officials from the Corps about permanent flood protection in Valley City.

Flowers
Flowers growing in containers may need to be watered daily. Hanging baskets of fuchsias and other flowers are especially prone to drying out.
A layer of mulch in containers can reduce watering needs.
Remove flowers in the garden after they fade. This is called deadheading. In this way, the plant wonât waste any energy on producing seed in these faded flowers. Rather, the plant will spend its energy on producing new flowers.
