Enderlin/Maple Valley fastpitch softball preyed on Grafton’s catching struggles at home plate to the tune of an 11-1 and 14-4 doubleheader sweep in arboreal Buffalo, N.D. — the first games ever played at the field — on Thursday night.

Viking Softball Inches Past Mayville

April 10, 2014

Viking junior catcher/outfielder Savannah McMillin’s walk-off single late Wednesday helped Valley City State sweep Mayville State, 3-1 and 2-1, in a North Star doubleheader at Shelly Ellig Field.

“We had to learn to be patiently aggressive — that was the word of the day,” Viking senior third base Liz Hall Sewell said. “We needed to play solid defense, and once we got on base we came through. For two freshman pitchers to come in, it really showed their mound presence.”

Freshman right-handers Ashley Metcalf and Morgan Nalley picked up complete-game wins.

Besties Win Weight-Loss Challenge

Beyond Fitness and All About U! Nutrition group issued a Biggest Loser Challenge to Valley City on February 17 to become healthier by making better nutritional choices, journaling their food intake and increasing their exercise goals.
Grand prize winners were Lori Strom and Bobbi Jo Langemo, the KB Besties, with 14.3 percent weight loss throughout the seven-week challenge. Congratulations ladies!

School District Proposes Program, Staff Cuts to Save Money

During a special meeting Monday, the Valley City Public School Board and administrators spoke to an audience of about 150 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, discussing ways the district could cut $600,000 from the general fund and get its interim balance back up to 10 percent by making cuts to staff and programs.

Schelkoph Named BSA Leader

Valley City City Administrator, Dave Schelkoph, has been elected as chairman of the Flickertail District, Boy Scouts of America. Schelkoph has been a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, Northern Lights Council, for several years in Dickinson, N.D. and most recently in Valley City.
