VC, CP Talking About Rail Safety

February 13, 2014

Valley City emergency response and other officials will be meeting with a Canadian Pacific Railway official this morning seeking reassurances about safety of trains hauling crude oil in Barnes County.
The meeting is scheduled to take place 10 a.m. Thursday at the Valley City Fire Department. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

West Fargo Girls Hold off Hi-Liners

West Fargo senior guard/forward Cassidy Thorson scored 16 points and junior guard Alison Enno 14 more as the undefeated No. 1 Packers led the No. 5 Hi-Liners 38-15 at halftime on the way to a 62-51 win in Fargo
on Tuesday night.

Senior forwards Dierra Diegel, 16 points, and Danica Diegel, 13 points, powered Valley City as the Hi-Liners outscored West 36-24 in the second half but could not rally for the upset.

Valley City (7-5 EDC, 11-4 overall) hosts rival Devils Lake (2-11 EDC, 2-13 overall) 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

VCSU Baseball Preseason No. 3

North Star Athletic Association baseball coaches voted Valley City State University to finish third in the preseason coaches’ poll, VCSU announced Feb. 7.

VCSU received 13 poll points, slightly edging Dakota State (12) for third place. University of Jamestown (23 votes) is the conference favorite ahead of No. 2 Mayville State (22).

Viking Softball Preseason No. 2

Valley City State University softball received a preseason No. 2 North Star Athletic Association ranking, VCSU announced Feb. 6.

The Vikings received 17 points in the poll, as voted upon by the conference’s five head coaches. VCSU enters their first season under head coach Elle Fracker, who was a VCSU assistant last year. The Vikings posted a 10-26 record in 2013.

26 Vikings NSAA Fall Scholar-Athletes

The North Star Athletic Association announced Feb. 6 that 26 Valley City State University fall student-athletes have been named NSAA Academic Scholar-Athletes.

A student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale in the fall to be an eligible recipient for the NSAA Scholar-Athlete award.

Viking volleyball boasts 11 award winners, men’s cross country six, women’s cross country five, football four.

VCSU Basketball Coaches Going Barefoot against Mayville State Wednesday

February 12, 2014

Valley City State University and Mayville State University basketball coaches will go barefoot Wednesday night to raise awareness for Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization that donates shoes for people in need around the world, as the Viking women face the Comets at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m, VCSU announced.

VCHS Students Earn Honors

Two Valley City High School seniors were honored Monday by school officials for achievements that will send one to Washington, D.C. to participate in a program sponsored by the U.S. Senate, and could include a presidential honor for the other. Bethany Berntson was recognized Monday at a regular meeting of the Valley City Public School Board for her acceptance into the United States Senate Youth Program, and Saidee Oberlander was recognized for her nomination for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.

VCSU Sets Spring Semester Enrollment Records, Growth Trend Continues

Valley City State University has released its final student enrollment figures for Spring Semester 2014, and those figures indicate that VCSU has set records for both headcount and FTE (full-time equivalent), eclipsing all previous marks since the university switched to a semester system in 1992–93.
