New Residents Invited to Welcome Event

Newcomers to the Valley City-Barnes County area are invited to a welcome event to meet civic leaders and learn more about the community. The event will be held on Monday, July 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Dacotah Pavilion in Chautauqua Park in Valley City.

Ken Evenson Remembered

July 9, 2014

Former Valley City Commissioner Kenneth Evenson of Valley City, 77, passed Wednesday, July 2, at his Valley City residence. At the time he was serving as a manager on the board for the Barnes County Water Resource District.
Evenson also worked as a lineman for Cass County Electric and Valley City. Evenson is survived by wife Dotty; daughter Deborah Ramsay; son Jeffrey Evenson, a medical doctor; and several grandchildren.
He also served as an honor guard with the American Vets Club.

Donations Sought for Debbie Gabel Ride

Organizers of the Debbie Gable Memorial Ride are seeking help from the community in the form of donations for the live and silent auctions that will be held in conjunction with the sixth annual ride to raise money for Hospice of the Red River Valley. Rodriguez, Johnson Look to Impress

A breeze of opportunity blew Tuesday at Mandan Memorial Ballpark as Nate Rodriguez of Valley City Babe Ruth, Jesse Johnson of Legion Post 60, and the rest of a collection of nearly 30 select reserves arrived for a nondescript 9 a.m. baseball tryout to which each received letters of invitation.

“It was good,” Rodriguez said.

Post 60 Splits with Casselton

Legion Post 60 found balance in Tuesday’s League game against visiting Casselton, stacking up 13 hits and allowing only two in a 9-4 win before Casselton scored eight runs between the fourth and fifth innings of the non-Leaguer for the 9-3 win.

“We’re never going to be a team that doesn’t hit the ball,” said Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema of Valley City’s aggressive attitude in the opener.

Post 60 completes the season series 2-1 against Casselton, having taken June 24’s League game 9-6 on the road before the non-League game was not completed with an 8-5 Casselton lead.

City Seeks Input on Renaissance Zone

Valley City will hold a public meeting Wednesday to discuss the future of the city's renaissance zone, which is set to end in July, 2015. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Valley City City Hall to discuss potential changes to the zone, particularly to re-examine the geography of the zone to determine if adjustments should be made that would allow property owners to take advantage of the renaissance zone, according to Tony Kobbervig, a member of the Valley City Renaissance Zone Authority.
