Boomer’s Wins Co-Ed Volleyball Championship

Boomer’s Corner Keg is your Valley City Parks & Recreation Co-Ed Volleyball League champion after finishing the regular season 10-0 for a first-round bye, defeating Centrol 2-1 (25-12, 20-25, 15-8) and taking down Service Master, 2-0 (25-21, 25-19) in the championship.

DeVries Returns as Vikings Coach

Jill DeVries, previously the Valley City State women’s basketball coach of 14 years before stepping down last June, is the coach once again, athletic director Jack Denholm announced on Tuesday.

DeVries replaces Cathy Hanek, who resigned after one season.

Kaminsky NSAA Coach of Character

Valley City State men’s head basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky is the North Star Athletic Association Coach of Character, an award bestowed upon a head coach outstanding in embracing the five core values of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Champions of Character Initiative — integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership — and using methods of teaching character through sport, and in community leadership through volunteering or service, the NAIA announced.

Denholm to Waldorf, Diegel to Northern

Valley City seniors Jessica Denholm and Dierra Diegel announced their college intentions on Thursday at the Hi-Liner Activities Center, where Denholm signed a letter of intent to advance her volleyball career as a setter at Waldorf College and Diegel signed to play basketball as a forward at Northern State University.

Shirley Proud of VCSU Tenure

When Dr. Steve Shirley arrived in Valley City six years ago at the age of 35, he was noted as one of the youngest university presidents in the nation.

Come July 1, Shirley becomes new president of Minot State University. At the time Shirley took the job at VCSU, he was vice president for student affairs at Dakota State University in Madison, S.D.

When Shirley arrived in Valley City, his biggest challenge “was growing the campus. Enrollment was fairly constant or flat for a number of years – like 20.

Grand Opening Planned for My Bar

The owners of My Bar in Valley City want the community to come out and see what they've done with their business after opening in February. A grand opening celebration is planned next week.
Thursday, May 15, patrons can enjoy Full Nelson Karaoke along with $2 can beers. Friday, May 16, local rock band Really Big will perform, and Saturday, May 17, Full Nelson Karaoke will be back.

Arrive Alive: VC Officials Demonstrate Mock Car Crash

Juniors and seniors at Valley City Senior High School were witnesses to a mock accident Wednesday that was intended to demonstrate the very real perils of driving while intoxicated or distracted; riding with an intoxicated driver; or riding in a vehicle, whether as a driver or passenger, without seatbelts.

Hi-Liner Boys Golf Shoots Season-Bests

All six Hi-Liners carded season-best rounds Wednesday at CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington, N.D., as junior Jared Lentz’s sixth-place 76 led Valley City to seventh for four points at 330.

“Conditions were maybe the best we have had all year, which is hard to believe, as they played 18 holes in the drizzle and rain today,” Hi-Liner head coach Buff Murray said. “No wind was a big plus for the first tournament this year.”

Senior Dustin Miller shot an 83, freshman Drew Oberlander an 85, sophomore Collin Hoss an 86, freshman Levi Nix an 88, and junior Ian
Schweitzer a 90.

Brady Anderson NSAA Baseball Player of the Year

Viking sophomore Brady Anderson is the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Year and is one of six Vikings to receive postseason honors, the NSAA announced Monday at the conclusion of the conference tournament.

Anderson led the North Star with a .443 batting average, picked up 23 extra-base hits and hit three home runs, drove in 38 runs and led the Vikings with a .506 on-base percentage and a .678 slugging percentage. Anderson was also named the NAIA National Player of the Week on April 1, and is All-Conference as a utility.
