Lady Loboes Beat North Sargent, then South Border

February 21, 2014

Lady Loboes basketball bounced back from Feb. 11's 48-43 home defeat at the hands of No. 5 Maple Valley with a 51-36 road win at North Sargent on Feb. 13 for their eighth win in the last 10 games dating back to Jan. 18.

LaMoure/Litchville-Marion led North Sargent 19-9 after a quarter, 25-18 at halftime and 36-31 before running away with a 15-3 scoring advantage in the fourth.

Senior guard/forward Courtney Carlson and 8th-grader guard/forward Anna Holen led the Loboes with 12 points and senior guard Tasha Piehl 10 more, all of whom sank two three-pointers.

LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Boys Win District 5 Tourney; Barnes County North Eliminated

LaMoure/Litchville-Marion boys hoops finished the regular season 3-1 in District 5 action and 15-6 overall, riding an eight-game win streak and taking nine of their last 10 games dating back to Jan. 18 to earn the No. 2 seed in the District 5 Tournament in Leal, N.D.

The Loboes beat No. 3 Medina/Pingree-Buchanan 69-62 in the first round on Feb. 14, then upset top-seeded Ellendale 62-51 on Feb. 15 for the District title and a Region 3 first-round matchup against District 6 No. 4 seed South Border, 3 p.m. Monday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Maple Valley Boys Nearly Make Regional Tourney; Richman All-District

Maple Valley boys hoops went 5-5 in District 2 action and 9-13 overall this season for the No. 4 seed in the District 2 Tournament at Fargo Civic Auditorium, where they fell 52-50 to No. 5 Northern Cass on Feb. 14, defeated No. 8 Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page 60-29 on Feb. 15 and fell 54-51 to No. 3 Enderlin in Monday's qualifier.

Raider senior guard Brady Behm led Maple Valley with 17 points against Enderlin. Eagle senior guard Daniel Lindgren scored 19, sophomore guard/forward Graham Hurlburt 12.

Jimmies Hoops Sweeps Vikings

The Valley City State women held an early 10-point lead Wednesday night, but the No. 3-ranked Jimmies rallied for a 108-72 win. In the nightcap, the Jamestown men led the entire way to take the game, 89-50.

VCSU’s Meland Feb. 2-9 NSAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Valley City State’s Jessica Meland is the Feb. 2-8 North Star Athletic Association Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the NSAA announced Feb. 11.

Meland, the sophomore from Harvey, N.D., earned fourth place of 21 throwers in the Open Division of the women’s weight throw at the Thundering Herd meet on Feb. 8. She threw a measurement of 13.72 meters (45 feet and .25 inches), just .37 meters shy of her own school record of 14.09 meters, which she set earlier this season.

Malik Jackson 3rd at Bison Open; VCSU Personal Bests at Herd Classic

Valley City State sophomore Malik Jackson led the way for Valley City State Track and Field at Feb. 15’s Bison Open in Fargo with a third-place finish in the 600-meter run, in which he bested his 1:25.98 from the Feb. 7-8 Thundering Herd Classic at NDSU with a 1:25.21. Jackson said he is excited to still have one more chance this season to run the 600, as he knows he can break the 1:25.00 barrier.

No. 2 Fargo Davies Soars over Hi-Liners

Hi-Liner junior forward Jared Lentz recorded a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double at home against No. 2-ranked Eastern Dakota Conference rival Fargo Davies on Thursday night, but the Eagles took the contest 95-53 for their seventh win in a row and their ninth in their last 10 games.

BC Accepts Paving, Grader Bids

Engineering work for construction on Barnes County Road 21 from the North Valley Bridge to the Bayshore Resort at North Dakota 26 will run $206,270, KLJ Engineer Sean Mayfield told Barnes County commissioners at a Tuesday meeting. More in Thursday's issue of the Times-Record.

Fire Destroys Oriska Shop Wednesday

A horse was injured in an Oriska fire Wednesday, but no people were injured in the blaze.
The fire, which destroyed a vacant shop in Oriska, burned for several hours before firefighters from Tower City and Valley City began knocking down the structure. The origin of the fire is unknown.

Winter Show Day Dedicated to Dogs

The North Dakota Winter Show is dedicating a day to dogs this year. On Wednesday, March 5, dogs will fill the main arena of the Winter Show as a dog stunt team and two rescue groups will be on site.
