Babe Ruth Awaits District 6 Final Opponent

Dawson Dietrich scored on a wild bases-loaded pitch in the second inning of Monday’s District 6 Tournament semifinal against Ellendale, Matt Brandvold came home moments later when Garret Suhr wore a pitch with the bases loaded, and Suhr came across in the fifth on a wayward throw to first base for the third and final run of Valley City’s 3-0 win.

Nate Rodriguez and the defense did the rest as Rodriguez struck out 18 batters on a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two four-strikeout innings in a complete-game no-hitter.

There are plenty of activities planned, including inflatable games for children, bingo and shopping, with great opportunities for photos. The street fair begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

Counseling Business to Open in VC

Valley City will soon have a full-time counselor to provide a service that public health officials have said is very much needed in Valley City and throughout the state. Jennifer Eberle, mental health counselor, will provide various counseling services at Creative Therapy, located in the Hub Mac at 150 Second Street Southwest, suite 1 in Valley City.

Food Bank Distributes Fresh Produce in VC

A semi-truck from the Great Plains Food Bank was in Valley City Friday to distribute food to area residents in need. Fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, frozen and refrigerated meats and even items like dog food and cold cereals were displayed in bins at the parking lot of the Regional Technology Center where a crowd was welcome to "shop" and pick up what they wanted.

Valley City Hosts Junior Tennis Open

Valley City welcomed 33 players from North Dakota and Minnesota in Friday’s seventh annual United States Tennis Association-sanctioned Valley City Junior Tennis Tournament, sponsored by the Valley City Tennis Association, Valley City Parks and Recreation, Mercy Hospital’s Young People’s Healthy Heart Program and Quilted Ceiling and Centrol.

Valley City and Linton’s bats were nearly as hot as the 90-degree temperatures Sunday at Charlie Brown Field, but Valley City’s cooler heads prevailed, 9-6, for a date with No. 6 Ellendale in Monday’s 2 p.m. District 6 Tournament semifinal.

Babe Ruth dominated LaMoure, 11-0, in the first round on Saturday.

Lance Weiser put Linton on the board in the top of the first as he swooped into home when a teammate took second.

Shakespeare Fargo/Moorhead is presenting a free performance of The Taming of the Shrew from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in Valley City's Chautauqua Park, said Valley City's Jenni Lou Russi, one of the actors in the play. More in Friday's issue of the Times-Record.

Baesler Pledges Big School Aid Increase

Valley City Public School District Superintendent Dean Koppelman said Thursday at first glance a promise to dramatically increase state aid for public schools could be a boon for Valley City.

As of Thursday, Koppelman said he had not yet heard from Kirsten Baesler, North Dakota superintendent of public instruction, about a 56.7 percent expected increase in state aid for education for the next biennium, but, “That sounds very, very good.”

Sisters Reunite in VC

July 18, 2014

Three sisters reunited in Valley City, their home community, last month. Irene Haugen, 90, of Valley City; Inez Hopewell, 85, of California; and Viola Medd, 95, of Portland, Ore. joined 120 family members, nieces and nephews to spend the day at the Ray Haugen farm north of Dazey for a picnic on June 28.
