The Valley City School Board approved the proposed 2012-2013 school year calendar (attached) at Monday's regular meeting.
A delay in the passage of a federal highway bill may put a kink in the cityâs plans to finish the Ninth Avenue Northwest reconstruction project in a timely manner.
The Valley City City Commission met in a special meeting Friday to nail down its options for the shortened construction window caused by the funding delay, which has already dashed any hopes of finishing the entire project in 2012.

VCSU golf wins title
The Valley City State University golf team had to share the team title at the Dickinson State Spring Invite Wednesday and Thursday at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson, but it was history making, no less.
The title, which the Vikings shared with Jamestown College, was the teamâs first since the sport returned in 2009.
The Vikings had three golfers finish in the top four, including an individual championship by Taylor Henrickson, who shot a 152. He shared the championship with Jamestownâs Jack Bietz.
Itâs a warm Wednesday afternoon, and six-year-old Rebekah Kauffman is sitting on a couch next to her mother, Misti, at the familyâs house in north Valley City.
A bundle of energy, Rebekah isnât one to keep still for a minute â frequently glancing around for one of her siblings, then laughing and showing off her bright smile.
But as sheâs asked questions, goes quiet, opting for quick, one-word answers.
âYou donât have to be this quiet,â Misti tells her. âYouâre never this quiet.â
Nor is she that shy.
By almost any measure, Valley City State University pitcher Ryan Shaw kept it simple in Thursdayâs 11-2 win over Dickinson State University, the second game of a double header between the teams.
âI was throwing fastballs and curveballs, trying to hit my spots,â Shaw said.
Simple as it sounds, it worked. The Blue Hawks were limited to four hits and two runs, only one earned, helping the Vikings split the first two games of a four game series. Dickinson won Thursdayâs series opening game 6-2.
The teams play again today at Charlie Brown Field with a double header starting at noon.
Valley City State University mens basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced earlier this week that Sedrick Jennings, originally from Killeen High School in Killeen, Texas, has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and join the Viking basketball program for next season.
He spent last season at Temple (Tex.) College and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Vikings.
Raise your hand if you knew my mom Pat (Kranz) Larson. She was born in 1930. Thatâs an important piece of trivia. I think that particular era explains what Iâm about to share with you. She escaped her Electric Mobility Scooter and Iâm certain was gifted working legs in the sky once she arrived. Sheâs in Heaven now. Most of you only knew my mom from her scooter days after she had her stroke. She called it her Cadillac. She was the woman who would drive around the town with that extremely decorated electric scooter.
SANBORN, N.D. â âEight minutes, which ainât bad,â business owner Terry Didier said as he clicked off the timer on the TV in the lobby of Didierâs Ag Center located on Main Avenue in Sanborn.
âNow eight minutes might be the difference between life or death for a rescue team.â
