Governor Visits Valley City Fri.

November 5, 2012

Gov. Jack Dalrymple (GOP), congratulated Valley City on the just announced expansion project that includes the John Deere Seeding Group plant at a press conference Friday. The estimated $20 million project, spearheaded by the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corporation, includes a purchase agreement on a 77-acre site along I-94 where John Deere plans an expansion project and the North Dakota National Guard plans a new facility.

“When they (John Deere) chose your community, it was a very good coup,” Dalrymple said. “This is a great day.”

Lunde's Big Day Ends VCHS Football Season

November 4, 2012

GRAFTON — As the Valley City High School football team walked off the Grafton High School football field following Saturday's 14-8 loss to Grafton in the state semifinals, there were plenty of emotions. A hint of frustration, a bit of sadness.
But the final result, as VCHS coach Scott Roehrich was concerned, was pride.
"I'm proud of the work the guys did," Roehrich said. "They represented their town and themselves in classy ways."
The game ended the season for the Hi-Liners, while the Spoilers will play in the Dakota Bowl next weekend against Shanley.

VCSU Football Gets Big Comeback Win to End Season

November 4, 2012

For a traditional football fan, Saturday's season ending game between Valley City State University and Robert Morris had weather that couldn't be beat.
Temperatures were in the thirties, the air crisp and calm with a light snow falling. Shelly Ellig Field was cleared, and a short berm of snow surrounded.
Though the Vikings' play early in the game left much to be desired, they finished their season on a strong note, scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half to beat Robert Morris 21-20.

Sophomore Olson Leads Hi-Liners to EDC Tourney

November 4, 2012

All season long, Valley City High School sophomore Clarissa Olson has provided a bit of hustle to the Hi-Liner volleyball team. Each match, she's among the team's dig leaders and has no problem finding a few kills.
But Friday, when the Hi-Liners beat Devils Lake 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-13 in an Eastern Dakota Conference play-in match, she wanted to step up even more.
"I just decided I might as well go for it tonight," Olson said. "Sometimes your team needs to depend on a person throughout the whole game and it doesn't matter who that person is as long they're doing the right thing."

Travel Alert Extended Statewide

November 2, 2012

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have extended the Travel Alert for all areas of North Dakota, excluding the south west portion of the state due to areas of reduced visibility and slush and snow covered roadways. Wet roadways have the potential to turn into ice as the temperatures drop this evening. The Travel Alert remains in effect until Saturday morning for areas surrounding the cities of Williston, Minot, Bismarck, Jamestown, Valley City, Devils Lake, Grand Forks, and Fargo.

Blonde on the Prairie: Constants Are Comforting

November 2, 2012

It used to be a front porch overlooking a little thicket of trees. Back in the day it must have been a pleasant place to hang a hat and rock in a rocker the whole day away. I’m guessing a ma and a pa had a conversation or two right there on the porch. I could imagine children opening and slamming the door as they popped in and out for lemonade and fresh baked pie. Maybe they hooked up a radio and listened to Bing, Frank and Dean Martin crooning true love tunes. Most likely the folks would watch wildlife like deer and fox and muskrats appear right there outside the five windows.

Pommerer said each church involved offers to handle a certain amount of baskets and Barnes County Social Services picks up the rest.
