“We would have started earlier, but a bus broke down. We’re kind of the mom and pop of the whole group,” Cindy said.

Our Outdoors: Pheasant Opener Remains a Highlight

October 18, 2012

Pheasant Opener; it’s Christmas, the Super Bowl and one of those Big Money whirlwind machines you sometimes see at casinos all rolled into one, except instead of dollar bills, confetti and wrapping paper, it’s feathers, lead and ejected shell casings that fill the air.

Whether the weekend is spent “at home” with friends, or “back home” on the farm with family, opener is always good for some new stories, some new ways to cook up our quarry, and some new looks at old tales that we all just get better at telling as the years go by.

MVE Football Wins 1st Region 1 title

October 15, 2012

ENDERLIN — During the final few drives of Fridays' 20-14 win over Oakes, Maple Valley/Enderlin football coach Brett Kapaun was okay with giving the visiting Tornadoes a few extra points, so long as the Falcons left with the win.
He told his team to simply "bend, don't break."
Though the Falcons were bent about as far as they could go, defending the end zone from their own two-yard line with 37 seconds left, they didn't break, forcing and recovering a fumble in the redzone to keep the Tornadoes from scoring what would have likely been the game-winning points.
