Jimmies Take Back Paintbucket Trophy

October 22, 2012

The way Valley City State University football coach Dennis McCulloch saw it, his team didn't have just one issue in Saturday's 13-10 home loss to Jamestown College, it had plenty.
"We had problems with the gap, and getting to the second level," McCulloch said. "We had problems with a lot of things."
The Jimmies, who lost earlier this season on their own turf, took the coveted Paint Bucket trophy back to Jamestown for the first time in four games. They hadn't won the trophy since the teams met in 2010.

North Dakota's own hip hop rising star Big Reeno recently released the official music video for his new, heartfelt single, The Forgotten Disaster, (view video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2I4oV4sbpooff) his untitled, upcoming project releasing early next year. The song was made to commemorate the first anniversary of the national disaster that occurred in Reeno’s home state of North Dakota in June, 2011. Feir and Wit: Upcoming Election Causing Heat

October 22, 2012

With the upcoming election, things are getting heated – even on social networking sites. Tweets, statuses and every other kind of post are filled with sarcasm, support and opposition.

There are three parties you may belong to on these sites; Republican, Democrat or the Annoyed Indifferents.

To me, the annoyed, “indifferent” party members are hiding – hiding from judgment and opposition. They want a little attention, like their outspoken friends, so they post updates that hold an opinion.

Staying Safe on Halloween

October 22, 2012

The end of October marks a popular holiday of fun and fright — Halloween, and Valley City will have plenty of Halloween events to entertain locals. With the spooky holiday, though, comes risks. The Valley City Police Department has some advice to keep children and teens safe on Halloween.

Cody Thibert, police officer at the Valley City Police Department, says that everyone should be aware of the extra children out on Halloween night and during public Halloween events.

“Be careful and slow it down,” Thibert advises. “There’s going to be lots of kids crossing the streets everywhere.”

The Barnes County Commission voted unanimously to raise the pay of the county Tax Director Betty Koslovski from Grade 9 to Grade 11.
Koslovski wiped tears from her eyes as she asked for worthwhile compensation from the commission.

“I think for what your position entails, you definitely should be a (Grade) 10 for sure,” Commissioner John Froelich said.

Koslovski is head of the county’s tax department, and Commissioner Phil Leitner said the responsibilities of county department heads varies from office to office.

Blonde On The Prairie: A Few Thoughts About Feeling Frazzled

October 19, 2012

Some days I get so rattled and frazzled and hurried. I get that way so much that I have to check the dryer twice to make sure the cat didn’t crawl in before I push the “start” button. It seems I always remember I forgot to put the clothes from the washer into the dryer the night before the morning I need what is in the washer. The problem is that the clothes have been in the washer, already washed for two or three days and so I have to re-wash them before I can dry them. Frazzling. The washer and dryer live in the scary basement. Most farmers have barn cats. I have basement cats.

October 18, 2012

As the Valley City High School cross country team waited to start its third annual Hi-Liner Challenge race at Chautauqua Park Thursday, VCHS coach Brian Engelhard took note of the weather conditions.
Compared to the warmth that filled Valley City Tuesday, Wednesday's races were run in temperatures in the mid-40s, underneath the overcast and drizzling skies that lingered throughout the day.
"Welcome to the third annual Coach Knows How To Pick 'Em Day," Engelhard told the crowd of runners and parents at the starting line.
