Hospice Sponsoring Lunch and Learns

Hospice of the Red River Valley invites health care professionals to its January Lunch and Learn offerings as it continues to explore various topics related to end-of-life care.

Sessions at Hospice offices in Valley City, Lisbon, N.D., and Detroit Lakes, Minn., will be through video conferencing with the Fargo office where the live presentation will take place.

Bonnie Oelschlager, a spokeswoman for the hospice, said Friday there will be no charge to participate in the sessions, “and they will be able to attend via video-conferencing technology.”

City Addressess 9-1-1, Special Assessments

Valley City Commissioners discussed its options in an ongoing 9-1-1 struggle with Barnes County as well as special assessments during a special meeting on Friday.

The 9-1-1 issue, or who will eventually control the system, has been a point of contention for months.

Currently, the city and county share the costs of running the 9-1-1 system. 9-1-1 operations are contracted out to the city by Barnes County and is operated from the Valley City Police Department.

VCSU Students to Take Classes in Rhoades Expansion

Students at Valley City State University will begin their first week of classes in January in the new addition of the Rhoades Science Center, President Steve Shirley said Friday.

“It’s essentially a two-part project, the renovation of the existing facility and the expansion,” he said. The 28,000-square-foot expansion is almost complete, and they’re just getting down to final crunch time.

Last season, the Valley City High School boys basketball team couldn’t get a win over a Class A opponent.
But the Hi-Liners broke the streak in style with an 81-51 win over Jamestown at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
The Hi-Liners used a solid defensive effort to go up 36-16 at halftime and never let up from there, getting the lead as high as 78-41 with about five minutes left to play.

Win over Jamestown puts VCHS girls at 5-0

As the members of the Valley City High School girls basketball team left their locker room Friday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, many of the Hi-Liners seemed almost euphoric.
The girls' win 60-58 win over No. 4 Jamestown High School moved the Hi-Liners to 5-0 this season and leaves the Hi-Liners as one of the two remaining undefeated Class A teams in the state.

VC Commission Fights Back on 9-1-1

Valley City Commissioners agreed today that if Barnes County pursues its campaign to take control of the 9-1-1 system, they will also have to take total financial responsibility of it. Mary Lee Neilson said after a special meeting today that the city commission also agreed that antiquated 9-1-1 equipment should not be moved to a different location until it has been replaced.

Crash Victim Names Released

The North Dakota Highway Patrol Thursday released the names of six men who died in a crash between a semitrailer and a pickup on Interstate 94 near Jamestown Wednesday. The accident happened on eastbound Interstate 94 at mile marker 258.

Sgt. Josh Rude said the six men were in a westbound pickup truck when the driver lost control. The pickup went through the median and was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound semitrailer. The semi trailer was being driven by 23-year old Stuart Hauge.

‘Quiet’ Law Won’t Affect Local Cable

Thanks to an new Federal Communications Commission regulation, some television viewers will start to notice that commercials are no longer louder than the programs in which they run. A new regulation states that commercials can’t be louder than the average volume of the TV show.

Area residents on Cable Services Inc., however, will not notice a change because the small cable company has been waived by the FCC from compliance with the new regulation.

According to the regulation, providers with fewer than 15,000 customers will not have to comply.
