First Graders Ring Bells

First graders at Jefferson Elementary School rang the bells last week collecting money for the Salvation Army. They collected $308.15. Heart Attacks More Common in Winter

Having a healthy heart and knowing the signs of heart attack are always important, but more so during the holiday season.

Dr. JoEllen Kohlman-Petrick, an interventional cardiologist at the Sanford Heart Center in Fargo, warned that she sees more heart attacks during the fall and winter. Anytime people are under more stress, like during Christmas when people stress over money and preparations, they are more susceptible to heart attacks.

Also, increased activity such as shoveling snow or deer hunting in a person who may be otherwise sedentary, can cause stress on the heart.

Mercy Home Health Adds Hospice Care

Mercy Home Health Care recently added Hospice to its line of services and consolidated all offices in the region to Valley City. The expansion also resulted in the addition of two new employees in Valley City.

Mercy Home Health Care added Hospice services at the beginning of their fiscal year in July. Kim Haarsager, registered nurse, became director of Mercy Home Care and Hospice Oct. 1, and Susanne Olson became Liaison/Fund Development in November.

Correction
An article and headline in Wednesday's edition of the Times-Record incorrectly stated that the Maple Valley boys basketball team is trying to win their third straight Barnes County Tournament title, when the team is trying to win its fourth.
Maple Valley won the tournament twice in 2010, when the boys and girls tournaments switched months, and also won in 2011.

Dakota Plains Donating to More Local Companies

Dakota Plains Cooperative, headquartered in Valley City, has donated to more local charities and has even more to distribute to during this year’s holiday season.

Every year, the cooperative donates money to organizations in the counties it serves, and then Land o’ Lakes matches the grants 100 percent.

“We do it during the Christmas season. It’s our opportunity to give back to the communities we serve,” general manager Ken Astrup said, adding “we try to do it this time of the year because the need is a little bit greater now.”

Hazardous Fire on I-94

The Barnes County Sheriff’s Department, Valley City Fire Department and the North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to a truck fire that contained hazardous, radioactive material Monday at about 3 p.m. on exit 298 on Interstate 94.

Barnes County Sheriff’s Deputy Don Fiebiger, who was at the scene, said flames were coming out of the brakes, which had overheated, and the truck driver had put the fire out himself. The fire department responded just to cool off the brake drums.

Pedersen Honored By V-500 Board

The V-500 Board of Directors held its annual Recognition Dinner on Saturday, Dec. 8 on the Valley City State University campus
V-500 is a scholarship program founded in 1972 by a group of people who realized the importance of scholarship support for Valley City State University students.

A highlight of the dinner was Dean Pedersen receiving the first volunteer of the year award given out by the V-500 board.

Pedersen said he was honored because “I got the most referrals” for people interested in helping the scholarship program.

Domestic Abuse, Surprising Stats

In Barnes County last year 720 people were victims of abuse. A total of 783 people in Barnes and surrounding counties. Of those, 638 adults and 38 children were victims of domestic violence. Another 31 adults were victims of sexual assault and 82 adults were victims of other types of abuse including terrorizing, assault, stalking, menacing and harassment According to the Abused Persons Outreach Center, Inc.

And those are just the cases that are reported. According to Michelle Grebel of the APOC domestic abuse is a silent crime because it’s so under-reported.

VCHS Routs GCC in BCT Opener

After losing its first game of the year to Wahpeton Friday, the Valley City High School boys basketball team was determined to come out strong in the opening game of the Barnes County Tournament Tuesday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
The Vikings did just that, beating Griggs County Central 66-40 in the opening game of the tournament.

Maple Valley Takes 1st Step in BCT Three-Peat

For the Maple Valley High School boys basketball team, the 2012 Barnes County Tournament isn’t just about winning a title as much. Rather, the Raiders are defending a legacy after winning the championship the last two years.
Tuesday at Osmon Fieldhouse the Raiders had a successful start to the 2012 tournament, beating Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page 65-36 in the tournament’s opening contest.
“We want to be back in that championship game on Saturday night, and that’s what we talked about,” Maple Valley coach Jay Kocka said. “Step one is complete, step two will be Thursday.”
