Construction Projects Moving Along Steadily

Chad Petersen from city engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson told the Valley City city commission that road construction projects in Valley City are moving along steadily as most are scheduled to wrap up in September and October.

“We have really millions of dollars at work here in the city, getting rid of those pot holes,” Valley City City Administrator David Schelkoph said during Monday’s meeting.

Falcons Top Titans in Season Opener

It's rare for a football game to be decided on a single play, but a match up between the Griggs/Barnes County and the Maple Valley/Enderlin Falcons is not an everyday occurrence.
An incomplete pass by the Titans sealed an 18-13 victory for MV/E in the season-opening non-regional contest on Friday in Tower City.
After the unsuccessful throw on fourth down and 11 yards from the goal line, the Falcons took a knee to run out the final 66 seconds of the game.

74 Runners Race in Sheyenne Shuffle

It was just over two years that Amy Foell Harbaugh passed away from cancer but the Valley City native and alumni of both VCHS and Valley City State University, is still fresh in the minds of local runners.

Saturday morning, Amy Wieser Willson, a friend and classmate of Harbaugh’s, was among those at the Sheyenne Valley Shuffle sporting an “Amy’s Team” t-shirt and helping raise money for a scholarship fund in her memory.

The caused finished front and center and Wieser Willson crossed the finish line at Lokken Stadium, winning the womens championship in the 10K race.

VCHS football cancelled
The Valley City High School football team will have to wait another week to start its season. Inclement weather Friday forced the Hi-Liners' season opener in Carrington to be cancelled. The Hi-Liners' season opener will now be 7 p.m. Friday at home against Dickinson Trinity.

VCHS Volleyball goes 1-5
The Valley City High School volleyball team opened its season with a 1-5 record at the Bismarck High-Century High invitational crossover tournament Friday and Saturday.

Chautauqua Barks

The fourth annual Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals Walk-And-Wag-Athon will be held all day Saturday at Chautauqua Park’s dog park. Event organizer Tracy Lee said the fundraiser has been increasing successful since it began as an effort to raise funds to build the dog park. Now the group uses the money it raises at the Walk-And-Wag to offset the medical expenses for animals in their foster program. The SVFA spays/neuters and microchips every animal in the program for what Lee estimated was an average of $230 per animal.

Free Plane Rides For Kids At Air Show

Young people aged 8 to 17 will be able to take free airplane rides during the Saturday, Sept. 8, during the two-day Wings and Wheels Air Show running Sept. 8 and 9 at the Barnes County Municipal Airport.

Toby McPherson, EAA member and co-chair of the event, said Thursday the free rides for youths are being offered through the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program, and will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Along with the free rides for kids, McPherson said the Fargo EAA chapter is also sponsoring a breakfast at the air show from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Legacy Townhomes Offer Amenities

The Legacy Place, an assisted living facility in Valley City, is currently in the process of building its third triplex of town homes, known has The Legacy Townhomes, that surround the facility. Owner Paul Diegel says the town homes offer great amenities and can be customized to the owner’s liking.

Six D Construction, owned by Diegel, has already developed two triplexes and is just completing a third. The triplexes consist of three connected town homes with three-stall insulated and heated garages.

They are available for purchase and each has its own lot.

VCHS Volleyball takes a different approach to the new season

When Valley City High School volleyball coach Katy Van Dyke entered the season, she set out to change things up.
From the general formula of practice to the way the team runs its 6-2 rotation, the Hi-Liners are building on familiar skills and adding a second defense to its repertoire.
"There's a lot more to what we've done in the past that we're going to do this year," Van Dyke said.
The Hi-Liners open the season today and Saturday with six matches at the Bismarck High/Bismarck Century Crossover tournament in Bismarck.

VCHS Tennis Hopes to Improve in EDC Play

The Valley City High School boys tennis team only won a single match last year against an Eastern Dakota Conference regional opponent, but they made it count.
After going winless against regional competition last season, the team beat Fargo South 3-2 in the regional tournament play-in match
"If you're going to get one victory, that's the victory to get," coach Matt Nielson said.
Though the team eventually lost in the regional tournament, it gave the team a starting point and this year the Hi-Liners hope to continue their growth in the EDC.
