Feir and Wit: Common Misconceptions About Homeschooling

February 4, 2013

There’s a common misconception that every home-schooled child belongs to an Amish sect, baking bread for their lunch with grain they milled themselves. They ride their horse-drawn buggies to town with their parents and eight siblings as they hide behind the brim of their bonnets and shun society.

Modern puritanical bliss.

Yes, I may have had an affinity for prairie-style skirts at one point in my life, but it surely wasn’t my mother’s doing. I blame Laura Ingalls Wilder for that.

I was homeschooled until eighth grade.

Whoever Can Come Band Jams Regularly

February 4, 2013

The Whoever Can Come Band played in one of their many jam sessions Saturday at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum. The band, as the name suggests, allows whoever can come to jam with them every other Saturday.

“It’s just a group of people that get together because they enjoy having jam sessions with each other, just jamming and playing music,” coordinator Mel Olstad said. “It’s been in existence for a number of years now, I would guess probably at least a dozen years.”

For the first time, Valley City’s Eagle Aerie will host a special event to benefit the American Cancer Society – the “Here Comes The Sun, Tonight’s Dream .. Tomorrow’s Hope Gala, said Rod Grafing, one of the organizers.

Grafing said the event is scheduled to run 6:30 p.m. to midnight March 16.

Hilde van Gijssel, the main planner for the event, said Friday, “Barnes County has long been hosting the Relay for Life and Daffodil Days, and over the last couple of years we figured there was space in this town to do something different (along with both traditional events).”

February 1, 2013

I am on a quest to find out. Maybe you, the Valley City Times Record readers can assist me.

I was the passenger as that husband of mine drove us home. Lately we’ve been traveling on short trips to and fro so not to get depressed. We are living proof that if you just keep moving your mind can’t hijack your joy. While he drives – I wonder. Bet you never knew I did that, did ya?

The Valley City Fire Department will hold their annual smoker Friday evening at the Veterans of Foreign Wars club in Valley City.

The annual fundraiser starts at 6 p.m. and the entrance fee is $10.

“We try to put the money (raised) towards certain equipment we need, smaller items like flashlights and small tools, something that we need that we use quite often,” Fire Chief Gary Retterath said. “Just so we can keep up with the equipment, make sure we have the equipment we need.”

During the smoker, the VCFD does raffles and sells bacon, ham, groceries and guns.

City Hosts Dairy Cow College

February 1, 2013

“What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beats also happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth also befalls the sons of the earth.”

The words were written by a North American Indian and posted on the gate of a large beef ranch. Dr. Gerald Stokka, veterinarian and North Dakota State University Extension livestock stewardship expert, used it as an example of why dairy farmers need to practice good stewardship during the regional Dairy Cow College.
