Sisters Reunite in VC

July 18, 2014

Three sisters reunited in Valley City, their home community, last month. Irene Haugen, 90, of Valley City; Inez Hopewell, 85, of California; and Viola Medd, 95, of Portland, Ore. joined 120 family members, nieces and nephews to spend the day at the Ray Haugen farm north of Dazey for a picnic on June 28.

Non-Emergency Calls: What Number?

A Valley City resident returns from vacation to find that his home was burglarized in his absence. Whom should he call; 9-1-1, the non-emergency dispatch number or the Valley City Police Department's direct line?
VCPD Chief Fred Thompson attempted to answer a question regarding non-emergency calls for commissioners at a regular Valley City City Commission meeting Monday.

Valley City 14U Softball Update

Valley City 14U No. 1 split with West Fargo in Casselton, N.D. on Monday, taking the first game 11-10 with Noelle Thompson’s big triple driving in two runs for the lead in the top of the seventh. McKenna Taylor pitched the win.

Kacee White picked up the loss in the second game, a 6-2 loss cut short in the fourth inning because it was too dark. White and Mackenzie Pederson scored in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, but West Fargo pulled away and Valley City’s bats could not get going again.

Valley City 14U is at State in Grand Forks, N.D. this weekend.

Legion Post 60 Swept at Wahpeton

July 18, 2014

Legion Post 60 ventured to Wahpeton on Thursday, falling 2-1 in the League game and 11-0 in the hitless five-inning non-League finisher.

Post 60 scored a run in the top of the sixth League inning, but Whapeton answered with two in the home half and shut Post 60 out of the seventh.

Dalton Ondracek and Chase Carpenter landed two hits in the contest.

Jesse Johnson pitched 5.1 innings for 13 first-pitch strikes and set down four batters. Austin Berg worked the final two outs of the fifth for a first-pitch strike and a strikeout.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Lorna Frantz, long time music teacher and resident of Valley City will be held at the First Baptist Church in Valley City on Saturday, July 26 at 7:00 pm.  Lorna Frantz passed away on March 14, 2014 in Fridley, Minnesota.  Lorna was an elementary music teacher at Lincoln and Washington Elementary schools for nearly 40 years.  She was involved in Valley City Community Theatre in the 1980s and a member of the First Baptist Church in Valley City.  

BREAKING: Malaysian Plane Shot Down Near Russian Border

Ukrainian rebels shot down a Malaysian jet carrying 295 people over eastern Ukraine near its border with Russia, a Ukrainian Interior Ministry official said. Peter Cook reports on “Market Makers.”

Captain Ronald C. Howard

Virginia Beach - Captain Ronald C Howard passed away on June 9, 2014. Captain Howard was born in Valley City, ND on February 24, 1935. He graduated from St. John’s University in 1956, and University of Minnesota Law School in 1960. He served in the US Navy April 1960 - August 1989 and retired Captain, JAG. He worked with NATO August 1989 - August 2000.
