The Whoever Can Come band will have a free and open to all jam-session at the Barnes County Museum from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Blonde Writes About Finding a New Home

This week, Jodi Rae Ingstad,"The Blonde on the Prairie," says in her weekly column that she and her husband are forced to move from their cabin, and she's asking readers to help them find a new place in the country so she doesn't have to become "The Blonde in the City."
"We need to live in the country," she writes. "I’ve flipped in to a girl that craves the smell of gravel dust and moss must. I found my soul in the grove of trees that is home to bees and things. It’s by the lights of stars and not cars that brighten my hope that everything will be OK in this unfair, rude, unkind world.".

VCSU Gets New Marketing Director

March 1, 2013

Greg Vanney is the new director of marketing and communications at Valley City State University replacing Doug Anderson who recently left the University.
One thing Vanney hopes to do at VCSU is to "make sure that new people get to know Valley City State, and that we keep those that already know about it in the fold."
As the director of publications at Luther College, his duties included overseeing the college's alumni magazine, other print publications and its website.

Regional Housing Short With New Jobs Planned

March 1, 2013

Barnes and Stusman counties are both facing housing shortages at the same time as thousands of permanent and temporary jobs are expected to be added.
Local elected and appointed officials have been meeting since December to look at possible solutions to the problem.
Valley City has been losing rental housing units to permanent flood protection buyouts, while Jamestown officials are uncertain why they are short of housing.

American Legion Burglarized Overnight

February 28, 2013

During the late morning hours of Feb. 28, two male suspects took an undetermined amount of cash after forcibly entering the American Legion in Valley City, Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson said in a news release.
"Once inside the building the two suspects checked the register for money and after finding none, located the safe," the release said. "The two suspects then forcibly broke into the safe and removed an undetermined amount of cash."
The Valley City Police Department is investigating the burglary and have no suspects in custody.

Senior Center Seeking Volunteer Companions

Valley City's South Central Adult Services is seeking people interested in serving as volunteer senior companions, said Dolly Hoelmer, outreach worker for Valley City's adult services operation.
Hoelmer said Valley City now has three senior companions, who each receive a stipend of $2.55 per hour to help people in need.

VCSU Alumni Foundation Hopes to Increase Involvement

The Valley City State University Alumni Association is using social media and events to increase interaction and communication with VCSU alumni.
VCSU senior and intern Dillan Ostrom is heading the project that allows alumni to get involved by posting pictures of their pets, answering a question of the week and watching videos of campus updates and improvements.
Kim Hesch, assistant director for advancement and alumni relations, said the alumni foundation wants to keep alumni more involved and keep them aware of what's going on.

VCSU Men Going to Nationals

February 27, 2013

The Valley City State University men's basketball team is going to the NAIA national tournament in Missouri.
After losing to Dakota State last week in the A.I.I. semi-finals and failing to earn their way to nationals, the Vikings got their ticket punched at a random drawing today.

Intern Aims to Boost Kid's Nutrition Savvy

February 27, 2013

Michon Kysilka, is an intern from UND working toward becoming a licensed registered dietician.
"Each student must have hands-on experience in a number of areas to meet the national standards established by the national Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics," said LRD Sharon Buhr.
Kysilka particularly enjoys working with students in the On The Move program and with the Mercy Hospital Young People's Healthy Heart Program.

Interest In Historic House Picks Up

Valley City has been hearing from increasing numbers of potential buyers of an architecturally significant house on Fifth Ave. SW that some people call the Pink Flamingo.
The house was originally built as a single family home, and was turned into rental property 10 to 15 years ago.
